MINNEAPOLIS (09/22/99) -- Malia Evjen (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.) recorded 13 kills to lead the College of St. Benedict volleyball team to a three-game sweep of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Thursday night at Si Melby Hall, 15-1, 15-5, 16-14.
With the victory, the Blazers, rated No. 9 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll and No. 2 in the Central Region poll, improve to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC. Augsburg falls to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC.
Evjen did not commit an attack error and recorded five digs in the three-game victory. Carrie Otis (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) had seven kills and six blocks (three solo), while Nikki Bauerly (Sr., Sauk Rapids, Minn.) had seven kills and seven digs. Rachel Reuter (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) led the Blazers with 23 assists.
Augsburg rallied in the third game, primarily behind the serving of
Tiffany Lynch (Jr., Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS), who had four service aces as the Auggies claimed a 14-10 lead. But St. Benedict rallied to claim the match victory by scoring the last six points.
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) led the Auggies with six kills and 10 digs.
Jessica Ness (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had six kills and nine digs, while
Adrianne Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) had six kills and the lone block (solo) for the Auggies in the match.
Emily Walen (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had 24 assists.
Augsburg competes in the Wisconsin-Eau Claire tournament this weekend (Friday-Saturday, 9/24-25), while St. Benedict hosts Bethel on Sept. 29.
