Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (9/28/99) -- St. John's University turned a 1-1 halftime tie into a runaway victory Tuesday night, overpowering the host Augsburg College Auggies 6-1 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Anderson-Nelson Field.
St. John's is now 4-4-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Augsburg scored first 15 minutes into the contest, as Chad Skogen (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn.) put in a corner kick from Eric Roy (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.). St. John's tied the game 10 minutes later on a score from Ross Golla (Jr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS). The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, as each team only had their two scoring tallies as shots on goal.
In the second half, the Johnnies poured on the goals, with the last four of the five second-half tallies coming from substitutes. Starter Nick Wessinger (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) started the scoring, and four reserves finished -- Brian Cleaveland (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS), Tim Schmidt (Jr., Eagan, Minn.), Andrew Spidahl (Fr., Fergus Falls, Minn./Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) and David Esch (Fr., South Bend, Ind./Trinity School).
St. John's outshot Augsburg by a 9-5 margin. Kevin Kohnen (Jr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) made three saves to score the win, while Morgan Davidsen (Sr., Holen, Norway) allowed six goals and made five saves in a losing effort.
St. John's hosts Gustavus on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., while Augsburg hosts St. Thomas Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
