Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (1/14/00) -- John Konrad (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored twice, including a power-play goal in the second period, as St. John's University held on to top host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Konrad scored successive goals in a 3:40 stretch in the second period to give St. John's a 3-1 advantage, a lead the Johnnies would stretch to 4-1 going into the third period. But Augsburg scored twice in the third frame and had two shots hit the goal pipes late in the game.
With the win, St. John's improves to 8-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 4-8-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the league. The two teams finish their MIAC series on Saturday (1/15/00) at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Bill Birrenkott (Fr., Anoka, Minn.) and Mike Zasada (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had goals for the Johnnies, with Scott Lochner (So., Sauk Rapids, Minn.), Corey Huck (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and Steve Aldrich (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) adding two assists each.
Augsburg's
Brad Schwartzbauer (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) opened the scoring at the 2:57 mark of the first period, but the Auggies could not score again until
Jake Wegscheider (So., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Mike Jackson (Jr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS) lit the lamp in the third period.
St. John's scored on two of its four power-play attempts, while Augsburg was shut out in seven power-play opportunities. The teams combined for 41 penalties for 82 minutes, most of the infractions coming on a second-period tussle.
Rick Gregory (Fr., Flin Flon, Manitoba/Notre Dame HS) made 26 saves to pick up the victory in goal for St. John's.
Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) had the same number of saves in a losing effort for Augsburg.
