Women's Basketball --Hamline 84, Augsburg 70
MINNEAPOLIS (1/19/00) -- Stacey Thill (So., Parkville, Mo.) had 23 points and six assists, one of four Hamline University players to score in double figures Wednesday night as the Pipers claimed an 84-70 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball contest at Si Melby Hall.
Thill had 18 points in the first half as the Pipers took a 41-31 lead into the locker room. Down by as many as 23 points in the second stanza, the Auggies cut the lead to seven points, 75-68, with 1:42 remaining. But the Pipers hit free throws down the stretch to extend the lead to its final margin.
Hamline improves to 5-9 overall and 5-6 in the MIAC, while Augsburg drops to 4-10 overall and 4-7 in the MIAC.
Chanteil Walter (Sr., Monticello, Minn.) and Sarah Wishard (So., Somerset, Wis.) each had double-doubles for the Pipers -- Walter with 19 points and 10 rebounds, Wishard with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Andrea Jurgens (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.) scored 17 points.
Augsburg was paced by
Jaime Kingsley (Jr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS), who notched her third double-double of the season with an 18-point, 12 rebound performance. She added two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
Jodi Soule (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had 14 points and seven rebounds, and
Adrienne Tietz (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Monticello HS) scored 10 points with six rebounds.
Augsburg was hampered by both poor shooting and foul trouble in the game. Augsburg hit just 35.7 percent (30-of-84) from the field, including just 1-of-21 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Hamline hit 46.7 percent (28-of-60) of its field goals. The Auggies committed 29 fouls to Hamline's 14, putting the Pipers to the free-throw line 40 times. Hamline hit 24 free throws in the game.
Augsburg plays at Concordia on Saturday (1/22) at 1 p.m., while Hamline plays at Bethel on Saturday at 3 p.m.
