Gustavus women sink Augsburg -- Five players score in double figures as Gustie women shake off slow start

ST. PETER, Minn. (1/26/00) -- Gustavus Adolphus womenís basketball coach Peg Moline has the luxury of using a nine-player rotation.
Moline shuffled her lineup like a deck of cards Wednesday night at Lund Center as the Golden Gusties rolled to a 80-52 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Augsburg.
It was Gustavus' bench which ignited a 14-2 first-half run which enabled the Gusties to overcome a sluggish beginning at take a 34-26 halftime lead. Junior Emily Van Hee led the burst with a left-elbow jumper and a three-point play off a slicing drive to the cup.
"I think in the early part of the game we werenít rebounding well and we weren't playing with our normal intensity," Moline said. "I think the slow start is real uncharacteristic of our team, but I think our depth showed again when that second group came in and got us going.
"I think that our balance makes it tough for teams to defend and it's fun to play with. Our strength is being a transition team and with halftime lead we tried to build on it in the first five minutes of the second half."
Gustavus (11-5 overall, 10-3 in MIAC) opened things up in the early stages of the second half as senior Katie Hansen's 10-point flurry helped the Gusties gain a 54-31 with 10:43 remaining.
Hansen, senior post Nissa Stolp and senior guard Shelly Bishop had 12 points each for the Gusties. Van Hee and 6-foot-4 junior post Tricia Niebuhr added 11 points apiece as nine players saw between 13 and 26 minutes of action.
"We just weren't pulling together and a lot of things werenít going our way mentally," Stolp said of the slow start. "We weren't making crisp passes and we weren't attacking the defense. Once we got that spurt we pulled together and knew we could do it.
"We made better decisions in the second half and we were more intense. One of our goals is to constantly go to the boards because you can pick up a lot of easy points crashing the boards both ways. ... Get it and go."
Augsburg (4-12, 4-9) led for much of the first half before three free throws from freshman Marnie Stenson and two inside hoops from Niebuhr gave the Gusties the lead for good.
"I think what we needed to do was run more and execute our offenses," Van Hee said. "Once we started looking up the floor and pushing things then things started to happen.
"I know by running good things are going to happen and just by having enthusiasm and a positive attitude I can get my teammates up and going. We looked inside more in the second half and boarded better. ... Our defense really makes our offense."
Gustavus enjoyed a 46-35 rebounding edge with Hansen and Stolp grabbing off seven boards each.
Jodi Soule led the Auggies with 14 points.
