Men's Basketball --Augsburg 86, St. Thomas 82
MINNEAPOLIS (1/5/00) -- Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) had 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists, leading Augsburg College to an 86-82 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over the University of St. Thomas Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC; St. Thomas drops to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the league.
Reed hit four 3-pointers in the contest, including two 3-pointers in a row in the final four minutes of play to put Augsburg ahead 79-72. St. Thomas came back to tie the game at 82-82 with 59 seconds remaining, but the Auggies hit four of six free throws down the stretch to claim the home victory.
The Auggies led most of the way, pulling away by 11 points twice in the first half and by seven points twice in the second half. But St. Thomas used a 13-2 run to end the first half and start the second to tie the game at 43-43 with 19:11 remaining. There were five more ties in the contest.
Five Auggies scored in double figures in the game, as all 10 Auggies who saw playing time scored. Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Nate Hoerr (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had 11 points apiece, and Travis Hinze (Jr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) had 10 points and three steals. Hoerr added three assists and three steals.
The Tommies were paced by the play of forward Mike Wrobel (Jr., Willmar, Minn.), who had 21 points and 16 rebounds. Joe Buri (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Trinity HS) had 15 points and Mark Buri (So., St. Paul, Minn./Trinity HS) had 10 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Kip Sparby (Sr., Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) had 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists. He hit three 3-pointers, giving him a St. Thomas school record for career three-pointers. He now has 210, three more than the previous record-holder, Johnny Tauer (1991-95). Sparby is 210-of-569 from three-point range (36.9 percent) for his career.
Van Rossum is also closing in on Augsburg's school record for career three-pointers. With his four extra-pointers Wednesday, he now has 179, six away from tying Augsburg's school record of 185, set by Scott Syring from 1989-93.
St. Thomas plays at Carleton on Saturday (1/8) at 3 p.m., while Augsburg returns to action on Monday (1/10) at 7:30 p.m., with an MIAC contest at Macalester.
