Women's Basketball --Augsburg 82, St. Catherine 66
MINNEAPOLIS (1/8/00) --
Adrienne Tietz (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Monticello HS) scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds Saturday, leading Augsburg College past the College of St. Catherine 82-66 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg forced 37 St. Catherine turnovers and claimed a single-game school-record 28 steals in the contest to improve to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC. St. Catherine drops to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the MIAC.
Erin Brockberg (Jr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS) scored 14 points and notched eight steals, the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. She also had seven rebounds and five assists in the game.
Augsburg jumped out to a big advantage, leading by as many as 23 points in the first half and by a 42-25 margin at halftime. St. Catherine cut the advantage to six points on a 12-0 run to trail 56-50 with 7:52 remaining in the second half. But the Auggies responded with a 12-0 run of its own to lead 70-52 at the 4:20 mark. Augsburg eventually led by as many as 24 points the rest of the way.
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) had 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers.
Betsy Gessell (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had 10 points, and
Liz Meskan (Jr., New Prague, Minn.) contributed five steals.
The Wildcats were paced by Emi Toutant (So., Eau Claire, Wis./Regis HS), who had 20 points. Jeanna Spannring (Sr., Livingston, Mont./Park HS) had 18 points and seven rebounds.
Augsburg hosts Macalester on Monday (1/10) at Si Melby Hall, while St. Catherine plays at St. Benedict on Monday. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
