MINNEAPOLIS (10/11/00) --
Angie Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) led all players with nine kills, guiding host Augsburg College to a three-game sweep of Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Friday night at Si Melby Hall. Game scores were 15-13, 15-10, 15-6 in favor of Augsburg.
With the victory, Augsburg improves to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in the MIAC, while Gustavus drops to 8-15 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC.
The Auggies used a balanced attack to sweep the Gusties, with five players contributing more than seven kills each in the match. Rieger added 10 digs, four blocks (one solo) and two service aces. The Auggies had a solid hitting night, hitting .264 as a team (46 kills, 110 attacks, 17 errors) for their third-best attack performance in a three-game match this year, while Gustavus was limited to a .161 hitting night (35 kills, 105 attacks, 18 errors).
Kevina Nakiwala (So., Kampala, Uganda/Ashby, Minn., HS),
Lisa Miller (So., Buffalo, Minn.) and
Paula Pogatchnik (So., Finlayson, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) added eight kills apiece. Miller led the way for the Auggies with six blocks (two solo).
Cassi Van Ausdall (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) notched seven kills and a team-high 13 digs.
Emily Walen (Sr., Stillwater, Minn./Hastings HS) contributed 38 assists.
Gustavus was paced by Tona Schmidtke (Fr., Waterville, Minn./Waterville-Elysian-Morristown HS), who had nine kills, seven digs and six blocks (one solo). Linnea Arvidson (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had eight kills and two blocks, and Courtney Lovejoy (Sr., Chatfield, Minn./Chosen Valley HS) had seven kills. Jessica Schaetzke (Fr., New Ulm, Minn.) led the Gusties with seven blocks, and Chrissy Homeier (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had 23 assists and 10 digs.
Augsburg plays at St. Catherine in an MIAC match Friday (11/13) at 7:30 p.m., while Gustavus hosts Concordia-Moorhead on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
