Men's Soccer 10/22/00 -- Augsburg 8, Wisconsin-Superior 0
MINNEAPOLIS (10/22/00) -- Matt Lachner (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) had a "double hat trick," scoring three goals and adding three assists, leading Augsburg College to its biggest scoring output in more than two decades, an 8-0 win over Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference men's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Augsburg improves to 5-11 overall, breaking a two-game losing skid. Wisconsin-Superior drops to 0-11 overall.
The eight goals were the most scored by an Augsburg team in a single game since at least 1979, the first season of accurate game-by-game records for Augsburg men's soccer. Augsburg has been playing men's soccer on the varsity level since 1970.
In addition to Lachner's nine-point afternoon (three goals, three assists), Steve Gehrman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) had a seven-point day, with two goals and three assists. Hugo Quintiliano (So., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka, Minn., HS) had a goal and three assists, with Jason Betsinger (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and Aaron Sharratt (So., Morris, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) adding the other Auggie goals.
Lachner leads the team in scoring, with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points.
Augsburg was efficient in its victory, converting eight goals on 19 shots. The Yellowjackets had five shots on goal.
Nick Shill (Fr., Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North HS) and Han Zeller (Fr., Winona, Minn.) combined for the victory in goal for the Auggies, making two and three saves apiece. David Jaros made 10 saves for Wisconsin-Superior.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with its final home game of the season next Saturday (10/28), hosting Gustavus Adolphus College at 1 p.m. at Anderson-Nelson Field.
