NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/4/00) -- Jeremy Schultz (Fr., Walton, Neb.) scored in the 66th minute as Carleton College edged visiting Augsburg College at Bell Field in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game Wednesday.
Carleton (4-3-2, 1-1-2 MIAC) dominated play for the majority of the match, but could not tally a score against the pesky Auggies (3-9-0, 0-5-0 MIAC). The Knights outshot the Auggies 26-9 for the match and held a 14-5 advantage on corner kicks. With the win Carleton remains unbeaten at home, while the Auggies suffer their fifth straight loss.
"It wasn't pretty," admitted Carleton head coach Bob Carlson.
The one thing that was pretty, however, was Schultz's team-leading fourth goal of the season. Junior Dakota Loomis (Jr., Lawrence, Kan.) beat his defender around the corner, heading towards goal. He laid a perfect pass in front of the net for Schultz, who hammered it home.
"They've got a nice combination going," said Carlson about his two top scorers, who hooked up for the second time in conference play. Carlson also pointed to the play of sophomore Andy Indresano (So., Grafton, Wis./Marquette HS). "He had a really nice game on the outside midfield." Junior Ehren Reilly (Jr., Berkeley, Calif.) picked up his second shutout of the season in net for Carleton, making a pair of saves on the afternoon.
Carlson was pleased with his gutsy performance and the result, even if it wasn't the best his team had played this season. "Despite the injuries we were able to come up with the win." Regular starters Peter Abraham (Sr., Eagan, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and Miles McDonough (Fy., Wichita, Kan./East HS) sat out the match due to injury. McDonough's status for Saturday's contest with Gustavus Adolphus College is uncertain, while Abraham is expected to play.
Augsburg hosts Hamline on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Anderson-Nelson Field.
