Men's Hockey 11/12/00 -- Air Force Academy 7, Augsburg 1
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (11/12/00) -- Freshman winger Shane Saum tallied his first career hat trick to lead Air Force to a 7-1 win over Augsburg in a non-conference hockey game Sunday (Nov. 12) afternoon at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
With the Falcons looking for a series sweep over their Division III visitors from Minneapolis, Minn., Augsburg gave the Falcons some problems in the first period. The Auggies prevented any Falcon rushes and held AFA to just 10 shots. However, the Falcons' special teams took over and led the Air Force to its third straight win. After a tight first period, the Falcons dominated the game and out-shot the Auggies 29-16 in the last two periods.
Saum put the Falcons on the board first with a power play goal at 7:23. His goal from the left circle to the far upper corner was assisted by Brian Rodgers and Brian Reaney. However, just 30 seconds later, Augsburg's
Jaro Cesky (So., Prague, Czech Republic) tied the game from
Joe Johnson (Jr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS). From then on it was all Falcons. Saum's second goal came with 5:22 remaining in the first period. Reaney sent a centering pass from the right corner that Saum punched in just 11 seconds after a Falcon power play ended.
In a physical second period, AFA's special teams took over with two power-play goals and one short-handed goal. The teams combined for 12 of the game's 18 penalties in the second period. Derek Olson scored his fifth goal of the season on a solid play by freshman defenseman Joe Locallo. Locallo took a pass from Reaney and skated with Olson on a two-on-one breakaway. Locallo rushed the net on the right wing and sent a perfect pass to Olson at the left post at the 6:06 mark. Four minutes later, Bradley netted his second goal of the season on a power play for a 4-1 lead. Andy Berg's power-play goal at 14:10 came from Reaney and Bradley. With 15 seconds left in the period, Kyle Fransdal stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated in uncontested for a short-handed goal.
An uneventful third period was capped off with Saum collecting his first career hat trick with 1:22 left in the game. Saum won a face-off in the offensive zone and walked in to the right post for his fifth goal.
Reaney tied his career-best with four assists in the game. Olson and Bradley each had one goal and one assist while Locallo had two assists.
Air Force, 6-3-1 overall, has had a season of streaks. After winning three straight to open the season, the Falcons had a four-game winless streak followed by the current three-game winning streak. Augsburg fell to 1-3 overall this season, dropping its third game in a row.
"We had to leave this weekend feeling good about ourselves and we did," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We have a huge series next weekend and we have to go to Detroit and bring home some conference points."
The Falcons return to conference play, Nov. 17-18, as the team travels to Detroit, Mich., for a two-game series against Wayne State. Augsburg returns to action with games against Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opponents next weekend in Duluth-Superior. Augsburg plays at Wisconsin-Superior on Friday night (11/17) at 7:05 p.m., while playing at St. Scholastical on Saturday (11/18) at 7:30 p.m.
