Men's Hockey 11/5/00 -- St. Thomas 4, Augsburg 1
ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/5/00) -- The University of St. Thomas' top forward line of Tony Lawrence (Jr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), Matt Caven (Jr., Mounds View, Minn.) and Eric Wenkus (Jr., Eden Prairie) had a goal and an assist each, leading the host Tommies to a 4-1 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Sunday afternoon at the State Fair Coliseum.
The Tommies, defending MIAC champions and NCAA Division III runner-up, claimed a split of the season-opening series with the win over the Auggies. Both teams are 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg beat St. Thomas 7-3 on Saturday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
St. Thomas scored twice in a 54-second span midway through the first period to take a 2-0 lead, on goals from Lawrence and Caven. The Tommies maintained the lead despite being outshot 28-25. Wenkus and Jake Searles (Fr., Centerville, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) had the other Tommie goals.
Andy Shermoen (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) had the lone Auggie goal.
Brad Moore (So., Lakeville, Minn.) made 27 saves to pick up the victory in goal for the Tommies, while
Ryan McIntosh (Sr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) made 21 saves in a losing effort.
Augsburg has a nonconference series next weekend at the Division I Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The teams will play Friday (11/10) at 7 p.m. and Sunday (11/12) at 1 p.m. St. Thomas hosts St. John's on Friday (11/10) at 7:05 p.m. in an MIAC contest.
