SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/3/00) --
Dottie Gilkerson (Fr., Somerset, Wis.) made her collegiate debut an impressive one, with two goals and an assist, but it wasn't enough for her Augsburg College women's hockey team, as the Auggies dropped a 5-4 nonconference decision to the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Friday night at Wessman Arena. The game was the season-opener for both teams.
After scoring the first goal, on a Gilkerson power-play tally six minutes into the game, the Auggies allowed four straight Yellowjacket goals, two in a two-minute span by Brei Thompson, to take a 4-1 lead in the second period.
Laura McGowan (Jr., Fridley, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had a goal and an assist for the Auggies.
Katie Cheese (Jr., Shakopee, Minn.) had the other Auggie goal in the contest.
Jodi Winters (So., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) made 24 saves in a losing effort in goal. Augsburg outshot the Yellowjackets by a 36-29 margin.
The game was a physical one, as the two teams combined for 10 penalties for 20 minutes. Augsburg had an apparent game-tying goal in the third period disallowed, and could not edge closer in the contest.
Augsburg hosts the College of St. Catherine to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
