Concordia-Moorhead drops Augsburg 37-13 at Metrodome

Football 11/4/00 -- Augsburg vs. Concordia-Moorhead, 1 p.m., HHH Metrodome (Minneapolis)

MINNEAPOLIS (11/4/00) Scoring 28 points in the second quarter to rally from a 7-0 deficit, Concordia College-Moorhead cruised to a 37-13 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Concordia improves to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the MIAC, while Augsburg drops to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC.

Down 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Cobbers pulled away with four touchdowns in the second period, scoring on each of its drives after holding Augsburg to three plays and a punt on each of its drives.

Josh Oien (Sr., Fargo, N.D./North HS) rushed for a 21-yard score, followed by a Jason Braaten (Sr., Dent, Minn./Perham HS) two-yard run. Quarterback Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N.D./South HS) threw two touchdown passes to complete the second-quarter scoring burst a 16-yard pass to Adam Strainer (Sr., East Helena, Mont./Helena HS) and a 50-yard strike to Raleigh Schmidt (Jr., Tracy, Minn./Tracy Area HS) with 37 seconds left in the half.

Augsburg struggled offensively most of the afternoon, turning the ball over three times (twice on interceptions, once on a fumble), while converting just five of 18 third downs and one of three fourth downs. The Auggies could only muster a 21-yard scoring pass from Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) late in the first quarter.

Tetzloff threw for just 64 yards, completing only four of 21 passes while being sacked six times, before being replaced in the third quarter by Dave Fransen (So., Farmington, Minn.). He found Johnson on an 81-yard scoring pass midway through the fourth quarter.

However, on the extra-point attempt, Matt Palmen (Sr., Mora, Minn.) blocked the kick and returned it to the Augsburg 45, where he latereled it to Mike Schwab (Sr., Billings, Mont./Skyview HS), who returned it the rest of the way for a two-point defensive extra point. It was the first defensive extra point ever scored against Augsburg.

Robert Clark (Fr., Seely Lake, Mont./Seely Swan HS) returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards, which set up the Cobbers' final score of the day, a one-yard scoring plunge by Len Crouse (Sr., Hazen, N.D.) with 7:18 remaining.

Hertel led the Cobbers with 135 yards passing. Oien had 65 rushing yards and Crouse added 47 for Concordia. Schmidt's 67 receiving yards on three receptions was the team lead.

Johnson led all players with 152 receiving yards for the Auggies on four catches, including the 81-yard strike from Fransen. Fransen threw for 139 yards.

Joel Vettleson (Sr., Richmond, Minn./Cold Spring-Rocori HS) had nine tackles (eight solo) and an interception to lead the Cobbers. Derek Flann (So., Lake Lillian, Minn./BOLD HS) and Mark Hankel (Sr., Mapleton, N.D./Oak Grove HS) had seven tackles apiece.

Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles (eight solo) to lead the Auggies, while Joe Souba (Sr., Hayward, Wis.) had eight tackles (five solo) and Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had seven tackles (six solo).

Concordia finishes its season playing at St. John's University next Saturday (11/11) at 1 p.m., while Augsburg closes its campaign hosting MIAC leader Bethel on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Anderson-Nelson Field.

SERIES: Concordia leads the all-time series 43-12-2. Augsburg has won the last four games in a row in the series, its longest winning streak ever against the Cobbers. Concordia's last win in the series came on Oct. 26, 1996 at Concordia, a 30-14 Cobber win. Augsburg won twice in the 1997 season, 13-10 in the regular season at Augsburg and 34-22 at the Fargodome in the first round of the NCAA Division III national playoffs. Augsburg won the last two games, both played at the Metrodome; 25-0 on Nov. 13, 1998 and 7-5 on Nov. 12, 1999. The teams are scheduled to play at the Metrodome next season, and will return to on-campus play in 2003 at Moorhead.

LAST YEAR: Brian Warden threw a 40-yard halfback-option pass for a touchdown to Mark Johnson with 1:34 remaining, giving Augsburg a 7-5 victory over Concordia-Moorhead at theMetrodome on Nov. 12, 1999. The game was a scoreless defensive struggle until the 13:04 mark, when Concordia's Clayton Horgen hit a 42-yard field goal, his first field goal of the game after missing two field goals earlier (29 and 45 yards). Augsburg's Matt Van Alstine had also missed two field goals (43, 38) earlier in the game.

The halfback-option pass from Warden to Johnson completed a seven-play, 80-yard drive, extended two plays earlier by a fourth-down 27-yard pass from Paul Tetzloff to Johnson, which put the ball on the Concordia 47-yard line. Johnson caught six passes for 135 yards in the game, marking the third consecutive game in which he had caught passes for more than 100 yards. Concordia was credited with a safety when Tetzloff ran out of the end zone on fourth down on the final play of the game. Augsburg was limited to just 193 yards of total offense, including minus-8 rushing (64 positive, 72 lost on sacks and the 31-yard run out of the end zone for the safety). Tetzloff was sacked six times by the Cobber defense. Concordia had 257 yards of total offense in the game (126 rushing, 131 passing).

Concordia quarterback Jeremy Nordick, who entered the game midway through the second quarter, completed 15 passes for 131 yards, but was intercepted five times by the Auggies. Nathan Reiff led the Cobbers with 46 yards on 13 rushes, while Adam Strainer caught six passes for 181 yards. Jake Kern led the Auggies with 13 tackles (11 solo) and an interception, giving him 12 to finish his career -- tied for third-best in the Augsburg record books. Kurt Werk had nine tackles (five solo) for Augsburg. Jeff Hartquist led the Cobbers with eight tackles (six solo) and a sack. Dan Tollefson had seven tackles (all solo). Mark Hankel had a half-sack in the game, giving him a Concordia single-season record of 14 sacks in the year.

AUGGIES CLAIM 12-7 WIN AT HAMLINE: T.J. Bramwell (So., Tomah, Wis.) scored two touchdowns and Scott Archambault (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) picked off two passes, including a key late-game interception, as Augsburg rallied for a 12-7 victory at Hamline on Saturday at Hamline's Norton Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.

Trailing 7-0 at halftime, Augsburg rallied for two second-half touchdowns, on a four-yard run by Bramwell midway through the third quarter and on a two-yard run by Bramwell midway through the fourth quarter. Augsburg could muster just 206 yards of total offense (93 rushing, 113 passing), but was able to hold on for the win. Augsburg's defense held the Pipers to just 46 rushing yards on 35 carries, while allowing just 172 yards of passing and forcing three interceptions.

Shane Gunderson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) also had an interception for the Auggies, which led to Augsburg's first touchdown. His pickoff and 25-yard return at the 8:37 mark of the third quarter placed the ball on the Hamline 5-yard line, and three plays later, Bramwell rumbled three yards for the Auggies' first score. The extra point failed and Augsburg trailed 7-6.

Archambault scored his first pickoff of the afternoon on the next drive, but an Augsburg field-goal attempt was missed.

The Auggies used a 14-play, 59-yard, six-minute drive to score the go-ahead touchdown. The drive was keyed by a 15-yard pass from Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to Sammy Gross (So., Springfield, Minn.) and a 16-yard pass from Tetzloff to Desman Oakley (Sr., Indianola, Iowa). Bramwell rushed two yards for his second touchdown -- his second career rushing score in an Augsburg uniform. The two-point conversion attempt was intercepted.

Hamline could not convert on its last two drives, and the final drive was capped by Archambault's second interception of the day with 34 seconds left, after the Pipers had driven to the Augsburg 31-yard line.

Hamline opened the scoring early in the second quarter, as Matt Stolski rushed two yards for a touchdown at the 12:45 mark of the period. Augsburg had a chance to score twice in the second period, but a field-goal attempt was blocked by Hamline's Adam Grinsteinner, and the Auggies could not convert after Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) blocked a punt, which put the ball at the Hamline 15-yard line with 1:50 remaining. The Auggies turned the ball over on downs.

Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries to lead the Auggies, while Bramwell rushed for 33 yards on nine carries. Tetzloff completed nine passes for 113 yards. Gross had 55 receiving yards on four catches, and Oakley had two catches for 32 yards. Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggie defense with nine tackles (six solo) and three pass break-ups. Chappuis had eight tackles (six solo) and two sacks, and Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) had seven tackles (four solo) and three sacks. Gunderson added seven tackles (six solo).

"We got some good experience out of our running backs. Bramwell played very well," said Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg. "It was a good defensive game on both sides of the ball. We started down a bit, but came back and played well, and we held on at the end. We didn't do that against Gustavus (a 20-13, two-overtime loss on Oct. 21), but we were able to hold on against Hamline. It's important for our confidence."

RECORD-WATCHING: Running back Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) is in pursuit of several Augsburg rushing records. He enters today's game with 458 career rushes for 1,743 yards, putting him in second place in school history in career rushes and fifth in career rushing yards. Warden has 150 carries this season for 607yards; last year, he set a single-season school record with 232 rushing attempts. The career mark for carries is 497, set by Wayne Graves from 1970-73; the career rushing record is 2,226 yards, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Just four Auggies have ever had 400 or more career rushes and just five Auggies have ever rushed for more than 1,500 yards in their careers.

Some defensive records that current Auggies are pursuing -- Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) has 10.5 sacks; the single-season record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) has eight sacks and 21.5 on his career to put him third-best all-time; Anderson's 28.5 from 1992-95 is the record.

AUGGIES TOUGH INDOORS, ON FAKE GRASS: This is the 14th time Augsburg has played in the Metrodome since 1983. Augsburg is 6-7 in the Metrodome and 7-7 in domed stadiums. Augsburg and Concordia met in the Fargodome in the 1997 NCAA Division III playoffs, a game Augsburg won 34-22. Augsburg is the only team to play on artificial turf for its home games. At Anderson-Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies, Augsburg has put together at 26-20 record since 1991. Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 29-47-1 at home. On artificial turf (including games at the Metrodome and Fargodome), Augsburg is 33-23 since 1991 and 36-54-1 since 1984.

Augsburg at the Metrodome: 11/20/83, lost to Bemidji State 23-7; 11/9/85, lost to Concordia-Moorhead 38-0; 11/11/88, lost to Gustavus 35-14; 11/10/90, lost to Macalester 13-10; 11/8/91, beat Macalester 29-14; 11/13/92, lost to St. Olaf 20-18; 11/6/93, lost to Concordia-Moorhead 28-0; 11/10/94, beat St. Olaf 34-20; 11/10/95, beat St. Olaf 20-12; 11/8/96, lost to Bethel 53-18; 11/7/97, beat Bethel 56-22; 11/13/98, beat Concordia-Moorhead 25-0; 11/12/99, beat Concordia-Moorhead 7-5.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES, COBBERS: While the hopes for a third-consecutive 6-4 season and fourth-consecutive above-.500 campaign are past, Augsburg has hopes of finishing the season strong, with 5-5 as a major goal. To accomplish that, the Auggies will have to beat two traditionally strong teams in consecutive weeks -- Concordia and Bethel.

"It's important to these kids. They want to finish 5-5," said Augsburg coach Jack Osberg. "It's important to our seniors, and they have to be up mentally to play well these last two weeks."

Augsburg has beaten Concordia the last four times the teams have met -- all on artificial turf. But this year, the Cobbers have pride on the line, and the emotions of playing in head coach Jim Christopherson's final two games as Cobber head coach. He is retiring after 32 years on the Cobber bench.

"Concordia will have emotions on their side," Osberg said. "They're very strong and can run the ball well. Their running game is solid and our rushing defense is solid, so it should be a good battle."

While Augsburg's defense has been strong, the offense has continued to struggle, only averaging 254.8 yards and 11.9 points per game this season. Augsburg has yet to have a spectacular offensive game this season.

"We need to improve our offense and our scoring," Osberg said. "Getting back on (artificial) turf, with our passing game, should help. Our running game has been improving, slowly but surely, across the board."

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg finishes its season hosting Bethel College on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field. Game time is 1 p.m. Concordia finishes its season with a game at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., on Saturday at 1 p.m.
