MINNEAPOLIS (12/1/00) -- Bill Birrenkott's (So., Anoka, Minn.) shot from the point trickled past Augsburg goaltender
Ryan McIntosh (Sr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) at the 1:08 mark of overtime, giving St. John's University a 4-3 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
The Johnnies improve to 3-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the MIAC, while Augsburg drops to 2-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.
St. John's had grabbed a 3-2 lead early in the third period on a power-play goal from Bryan Talbot (So., Anoka, Minn.), but the Auggies tied it when
Nick Murray (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) found the puck in front and deposited it past Johnnie goalie Adam Laaksonen (So., Cloquet, Minn.) with 4:49 remaining in regulation.
Augsburg outshot St. John's by a 37-36 margin; McIntosh stopped 32 Johnnie shots, while Laaksonen made 34 saves to score the OT win.
The teams traded goals the first two periods, as
Andy Ness (Sr., North St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) put the Auggies in front at the 1:33 mark of the first, followed three minutes later by a Corey Huck (So., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) power-play goal for the Johnnies.
Tim Olsen(Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season to put the Auggies in front early in the second period, but the Johnnies tied the game on a tally from Shane Taylor (So., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) midway through the frame.
Kevin Willey (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) had assists on three of the four Johnnie goals, including the game-winner. Chad Hacker (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) and Jake Froiland (Jr., Andover, Minn./Anoka HS) had two assists apiece for the Johnnies.
Mike Jackson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS) had two assists for the Auggies.
The two teams close their MIAC series on Saturday (12/2) afternoon at 3 p.m. at St. John's home rink, the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
