RICHMOND, Minn. (12/1/00) --
Kristi Brusletto (Jr., Basalt, Colo.) scored two goals Friday night, leading Augsburg College to a dominating 4-1 victory over the host College of St. Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game at Rich-Lakes Ice Arena.
With the victory, Augsburg claims its first MIAC win of the season (1-2) and improves to 2-3 overall. St. Benedict drops to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Despite dressing just 13 skaters and three goalies due to injuries and other concerns, Augsburg still dominated every facet of the game. The Auggies outshot the Blazers by a 51-27 margin, while tying a school record with a penalty-free effort. Augsburg has had penalty-free games on three earlier occasions in school history.
The Auggies jumped out to a 3-1 first-period lead, using goals from
Laura McGowan (Jr., Fridley, Minn./St. Louis Park HS), Brusletto and
Katie Cheese (Jr., Shakopee, Minn.). Brusletto capped the scoring with a power-play tally late in the third period.
McGowan added an assist for a two-point night, while
April Leger (Jr., Austin, Minn.) also had a two-point night, both assists.
Annie Mattison (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/East HS) had the other Auggie assist.
Paula Vogt had the lone Blazer goal, coming at the halfway mark of the first period on an assist from Katy Rollwagen.
Jodi Winters (So., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area HS) made 26 saves to pick up the win in the net for the Auggies. Kate Hall faced 51 shots and made 47 saves for the Blazers.
The teams conclude their MIAC series Saturday (12/2) afternoon at 2:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
