Men's Hockey 12/15/00 -- Wisconsin-River Falls 6, Augsburg 2
RIVER FALLS, Wis. (12/15/00) -- David Almquist and Adam Kragthorpe each scored a pair of goals as the host University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons defeated Augsburg College, 6-2, in front of 772 spectators at Hunt Arena in a nonconference men's hockey game Friday night.
With the score tied at 1-1, Almquist floated a wrister from below the left circle past Auggie goaltender
Bernie Reis for his third goal of the season at 4:07 of the second period.
Seven minutes later, Kragthorpe's one-timer from the left face-off dot gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead.
Augsburg would cut the lead to 3-2 going into the third period on a
Jaro Cesky power-play goal, but the Falcons came out roaring in the third period.
The Falcons outshot the Auggies 13-9 in the decisive period. Kragthorpe scored on a slapshot from the right circle to make it 4-2. Less than a minute later, Carl Boben beat Reis with a deke and a backhand for a three-goal lead. Boben would later find a streaking Almquist in front of the crease. Almquist redirected the puck top-shelf for the final tally.
The Falcons were outshot for the game, 28-26, due to a lackluster second period. However, goaltender Jacque Vezina was up to the task, stopping 26 shots in the contest.
Augsburg grabbed the lead early in the first period with a power-play goal from
Joe Johnson, but the Falcons quickly erased the lead when Jeff Bernard flung a wrister from the left face-off circle past Reis. Bernard took a pass from Shane Fukushima while moving away from the goal, turn around, a fired the puck past Reis' shortside.
The Falcons improve to 11-2-1 while the Auggies fall to 5-6. The Falcons will next play at UW-Eau Claire for a non-conference tilt on Saturday (12/16). The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Augsburg is off for the holidays, and returns to action on Jan. 5 hosting Lake Forest (Ill.) at 7 p.m.
