Women's Basketball 12/20/00 -- Augsburg 60, Bluffton (Ohio) 52
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (12/19/00) --
Carrie Schwartz (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) had 10 points and six steals, and
Rowena Sizer (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) nearly had a double-double, as Augsburg College clamed a tier championship at the Adidas Desert Classic women's basketball tournament with a 60-52 win over Bluffton College (Ohio) Wednesday afternoon at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas McDermott Sports Complex.
With the win, its third in a row, Augsburg improves to 3-4 overall. Bluffton, which finished third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference last season, drops to 4-4 overall. The tournament features numerous four-team tiers, paired together based on previous season records.
Augsburg led 32-20 at halftime, but had to hold off a late Bluffton rally to secure the win. The Beavers cut the Auggie lead to one point midway through the half and to within five points with a minute remaining, but the Auggies hit their free throws when Bluffton was forced to foul. Augsburg ended up hitting 17 of 32 free throws (53.1 percent) in the game.
"We really executed well," said Augsburg coach Lauri Ludeman. "We gained a ton of confidence in our ability to finish tight games and win them, the kind of games we lost last year. Everybody contributed. I was really proud of our performance."
Sizer had eight points and led all players with 12 rebounds for the Auggies.
Jaime Kingsley (Sr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) had eight points and six rebounds, and
Rachael Ekholm (Jr., Richfield, Minn.),
Allison Illa (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) and
Erin Brockberg (Sr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS) scored seven points apiece.
Nine of the 11 Auggies who saw action in the game scored. The Auggies forced 27 Bluffton turnovers and claimed 25 steals in the game.
Bluffton was paced by Liz Bock (Sr., Maumee, Ohio), who had 11 points and seven rebounds. Jen Bear (Sr., Grover Hill, Ohio/Lincolnview HS) scored nine points, Elizabeth Snavely (Sr., Defiance, Ohio) had eight points and nine rebounds, and Bree Wood (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio) scored eight points and had seven rebounds.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a game at Macalester College on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m., in St. Paul, Minn.
