Men's Basketball 12/29/00 -- Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) 89, Augsburg 82
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (12/29/00) -- Neil Mendez (So., Lynwood, Wash./Mountlake Terrace HS) scored 24 points and pulled down seven rebounds, leading Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) to an 89-82 win over Augsburg College in the first game of the Lutheran Brotherhood men's basketball tournament at California Lutheran University on Friday night.
Augsburg drops to 3-3 overall, breaking a three-game winning streak. Pacific Lutheran improves to 4-4 overall. Pacific Lutheran plays Luther (Iowa) in the tourney final on Saturday (12/30) at 8 p.m. Augsburg and host California Lutheran play in the third-place game Saturday at 6 p.m. Luther topped California Lutheran 69-66 in the second game Saturday.
Tied at 31-31 late in the first half, Pacific Lutheran went on a 12-5 run to lead 47-38 at halftime. The Lutes never trailed in the second half, though the Auggies outscored the Lutes by a 44-42 mark in the second frame.
Treven Vander Ploeg (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) had 18 points, four assists and three steals for the Lutes, while Michael Kelley (Fr., Tacoma, Wash./Mount Tahoma HS) had 12 points and Parker Barth (Jr., Pateros, Wash.) scored 11 points.
Jeff Willihnganz (Fr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) continued his hot shooting from the outside for the Auggies, connecting on six of eight 3-point shots to lead the Auggies with 18 points.
Tommy Chatman (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Jordan HS) also had a solid shooting night, hiting six of eight field goals to score 15 points, while adding five assists.
Matt Davis (Sr., Marshall, Minn.) scored 14 points and eight rebounds, and
Travis Hinze (Sr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) had 11 points
