Men's Hockey 12/8/00 -- Augsburg 4, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 2
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (12/8/00) -- Goalie
Ryan McIntosh (Sr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) stopped 46 of 48 Wisconsin-Stevens Point shots to lead the Augsburg College men's hockey team to a 4-2 upset victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference game Friday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsubrg is now 4-5-0 overall. Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which entered the weekend ranked fourth in the nation in the most recent U.S. College Hockey Online NCAA Division III national rankings, drops to 7-4-0 overall. It is just the second loss the Pointers have suffered in their last eight games.
McIntosh was the difference for the Auggies in the victory, as he held off a furious third-period Pointer rally. Wisconsin-Stevens Point attacked the Auggie netminder with 21 shots in the final frame, and McIntosh saved them all, including several point-blank shots in front of the net.
Augsburg jumped on top with a three-goal first period, on tallies from
Brad Holzinger (So., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS),
Mike Jackson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS) and
Brad Schwartzbauer (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.). Schwartzbauer ended up being the only Auggie with a multiple-point night, adding an assist for two points in the contest. Wisconsin-Stevens Point could only counter once in the first period, on a tally from Matt Interbartolo (Sr., Toronto, Ontario/De La Salle HS). He added an assist for a two-point evening.
The teams traded power-play goals in the second period, Wisconsin-Stevens Point's on a Ryan Maxson (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) tally and Augsburg's on a goal from
Tim Olsen (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS).
Wisconsin-Stevens Point outshot Augsburg by a 48-38 margin. Dave Cinelli (Jr., Woodbrige, Ontario/St. Michael's College) made 34 saves in a losing effort for the Pointers.
Augsburg hosts Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a nonconference game Saturday (12/9) at 7:30 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena, while Wisconsin-Stevens Point travels to face Bethel College on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Columbia Ice Arena in Fridley, Minn.
