MINNEAPOLIS (12/9/00) -- Emily Kearns (Fr., Hopkins, Minn.) and Tennie McCabe (Fr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) each had three-point nights, with two goals and one assist apiece, as St. Mary's University scored a 7-2 rout of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg Ice Arena.
St. Mary's, which shared the MIAC regular-season title with Augsburg last season, improves to 7-3-0 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in MIAC play.
Kearns scored twice in the first period, and McCabe notched a goal in the second and a shorthanded goal in the third period to lead the Cardinals to the convincing victory.
St. Mary's built a 5-0 lead after two periods before the Auggies cut the lead on two unassisted goals in a 27-second span of the third period, from
Angie Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) and
Laura McGowan (Jr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS). However, on an Augsburg power play later in the period, St. Mary's scored two unassisted, shorthanded goals to clinch the win, from McCabe and Christy Hicks (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), in a 53-second span.
Sarah Gibbons (So., Lemont, Ill./Sandburg HS) and Tasa Kostel (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) also scored for the Cardinals.
Augsburg outshot St. Mary's by a 37-28 margin in the game, including peppering 18 shots in the third period to St. Mary's 4. Missie Meemken (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) made 35 saves to claim the win for the Cardinals;
Jodi Winters (So., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) was able to make just 21 saves in a losing effort for Augsburg.
The two teams conclude their two-game MIAC series on Sunday (12/10) at 2:05 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
