MINNEAPOLIS (2/11/00) --
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) set two school records with her second hat trick of the season , scoring three goals and adding two assists as Augsburg held off St. Thomas 7-6 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg improves to 13-5 overall and 8-1 in the MIAC with the win, while St. Thomas falls to 10-6-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the MIAC. The two teams play again Saturday (2/12) at 7:30 p.m. at Parade Ice Arena in Minneapolis.
Rieger's, hat trick, the third of her career, marks the first time an Augsburg player has had more than one in a single season (in games against varsity opponents only). Her five-point performance also tied a single-game school record, previously set by Jenny Burg and Christine Stanley, both in a 1996 game against Amherst (Mass.).
Rieger scored two of Augsburg's four-goal outburst in the first 7:13 of the game, as the Auggies jumped out to a 4-0 lead. However, the Tommies, behind two goals from Kelly Kopel (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.) and two goals from Heather Martin (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Blake HS), kept the Tommies in the contest the entire way.
Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) had two goals and an assist for the Auggies, with the other Augsburg goals coming from
Laura McGowan (So., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and
Stephanie Johnson (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS).
Erica Buck (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had a goal and four assists for a five-point night for the Tommies, while Molly Nei (Jr., Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) had the other Tommie goal.
Augsburg outshot the Tommies by a 45-20 margin in the game. Each team used two goalies in the contest.
