1999-2000 Augsburg Women's Basketball
St. Benedict at Augsburg - 2/12
Women's Basketball --St. Benedict 90, Augsburg 69
Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (2/12/00) -- Laura Wendorff (Sr., Fulda, Minn.) scored 28 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, blocked five shots and notched four steals as the College of St. Benedict rallied from an early first-half deficit to overwhelm host Augsburg College 90-69 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
With the win, St. Benedict, the defending NCAA Division III national runner-up and current No. 14-rated team in the WBCA national poll, improves to 17-4 overall and 16-2 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 5-16 overall and 5-13 in the MIAC.
Augsburg led 24-14 at the 12:48 mark of the first half, hitting nine of their first 14 field goals and nailing 4-of-4 three-pointers. But the Blazers used a 22-2, six-minute run to overcome the Augsburg advantage, eventually outscoring the Auggies 38-6 in the final 12:48 of the half to lead 52-30 at halftime. The Blazers led by as many as 26 points in the second half.
Wendorff was one of four Blazers to score in double figures in the game. Molly Mark (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) had 12 points, four assists and three steals. Julie Korf (Sr., Pierz, Minn.) had 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, and Jackie Bye (Fr., West St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had 10 points.
Augsburg's
Jodi Soule (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) tied a school record by going a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point range. Five players previously had perfect three-point games (minimum three 3-pointers), with Shannon Mathre going 5-for-5 from behind the arc in a 1995 game against Concordia-St. Paul.
Soule ended up scoring 31 points and pulling down a team-high seven rebounds for the Auggies, the second time this season Soule has scored at least 30 points in a game. Soule previously had 32 points at Bethel on Dec. 11. Her six 3-pointers in the game are the second-most in a single game in school history. The record, seven, was set by
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) against St. Olaf last season.
Ekholm was the only other Auggie to score in double figures, with 12 points. She had two 3-pointers to give her 47 three-pointers on the season, two away from the single-season school record of 49, set by Tara Oseland in the 1996-97 season.
Augsburg hosts Carleton in its final home game of the season on Wednesday (2/16), St. Benedict plays at MIAC leader St. Thomas. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
