WINONA, Minn. (2/20/00) --
Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) scored a power-play goal early in the second period Sunday afternoon, as Augsburg College held on for a 1-1 overtime tie with St. Mary's University in a battle of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leaders at the SMU Ice Arena.
With the tie, Augsburg remains in a first-place tie with St. Mary's in the MIAC title race with one conference series remaining in the regular season for each team. Augsburg is 15-5-1 overall and 10-1-1 in the MIAC, while St. Mary's is 16-5-2 overall and 10-1-1 in the MIAC.
Should the teams tie for the regular-season championship, Augsburg would have home-ice advantage in the four-team MIAC playoffs, based on the conference's tiebreaker format, which addresses head-to-head results first. Augsburg won 4-3 over the Cardinals on Saturday at the Augsburg Ice Arena. The MIAC's playoff champion advances to the AWCHA Division III national championships, set for March 24-25 in Boston, Mass.
Garrison's goal, a tip-in from
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) on a feed from
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS), tied the game at the 5:10 mark of the second period. The goal is Garrison's 10th of the season.
St. Mary's scored on an unassisted tally from Missy Westergren (So., Lonsdale, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) at the 16:08 mark of the first period. Westergren scored three goals -- two unassisted -- in the weekend series, lifting her total to a team-high 21 this season.
Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Missie Meemken (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) had brilliant games in goal to pick up the tie. Schmidt made 36 saves for Augsburg; Meemken made 35 saves for St. Mary's.
Augsburg closes its regular season with a two-game series against St. Catherine, Wednesday (2/23) at 7:45 p.m. at the Drake Ice Arena in St. Paul, Minn. (1712 Randolph Ave.) and Saturday (2/26) at 2:05 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena. St. Mary's hosts St. Benedict Friday (2/25) and Saturday (2/26) in Winona, games at 7:05 p.m. and 12:05 p.m., respectively.
