Game Summary:
WINONA, Minn. (2/23/00) -- Jenny Gilles scored eight straight points in a minute on Wednesday night to rally her St. Mary's University women's basketball team past visiting Augsburg College 79-73 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the SMU Gymnasium.
Gilles rallied the Cardinals from a 67-62 deficit with under six minutes to play in the second half with her eight-point run, giving the Cardinals the lead for good. She ended up as one of two St. Mary's players to notch a double-double, with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Augsburg dorps to 6-18 overall and 6-15 in the MIAC with the loss, while St. Mary's improves to 12-12 overall and 12-9 in the MIAC.
St. Mary's led 39-33 at halftime, but the Auggies forged ahead in the second half, leading by as many as five points twice in the closing nine minutes of play. The Cardinals came back to tie the game at 62-62, but Augsburg pulled ahead again before Gilles' run.
Stacy Hammel (added a double-double for the Cardinals, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jenny Long led the Cardinals in scoring with 20 points, and Amy Burns had 10 points.
Jaime Kingsley (Jr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) led the Auggies with her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 23 points and adding 16 rebounds.
Liz Meskan (Jr., New Prague, Minn.) had a season-high 18 points, and
Jodi Soule (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) scored 10 points.
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) hit one 3-pointer in the contest, in the process breaking Augsburg's single-season school record for three-pointers in a season. She now has 50, breaking the old record of 49, set by Tara Oseland in the 1996-97 season.
Augsburg closes its season with a Saturday (2/26) contest at St. Olaf, while St. Mary's hosts Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday. Both games are at 3 p.m.
