MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/25/00) -- Scoring seven goals against an Augsburg hockey team normally would be cause for an extended celebration by the Concordia Cobbers. Not so in a two-game postseason series.
"It's halftime," Concordia head coach Steve Baumgartner said after his team whipped the Auggies 7-2 Friday in the opening round of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs at the Moorhead Sports Center.
The result means the Cobbers can win the series with a win or tie in tonight's 7 p.m. finale. But a victory by Augsburg would send the series into a 15-minute mini-game.
"The score really doesn't matter," Augsburg head coach Mike Schwartz said. "Whether it would have been 2-1 or 15-1, it's still just a two-point loss and we still have a shot today. I don't think we're intimidated by playing here but we have to start taking advantage of our quality chances."
By the numbers, at least, it was a surprising outburst by Concordia. The Cobbers came in averaging just 1.04 goals in their last eight games against the Auggies.
But this time they opted for quality over quantity against Augsburg goalie
Ryan McIntosh.
"He's a great goalie but tonight we went hard to the net and scored on some rebounds and tipped shots," said Concordia defenseman Bryan Knutson, who scored the first goal of the game when he charged the slot and knocked home Ken Putt's centering pass. "We've been working hard on that in practice all week."
The Cobbers had a solid effort from top to bottom, starting with 27 saves from goalie Bryan Howard. Both of Augsburg's goals came on breakaways. Concordia also received goals from four forwards and three defensemen.
"We've been able to contribute to the offense quite a bit this year so that was nothing unusual," said defenseman Guy Clairmont, noting that three of the top seven point-getters on the team are blue-liners.
"But you've got to be able to pick your spots, especially when they like to sneak guys out (for breakaways) a lot."
After a typical tight-checking first period, which ended in a 1-1 tie, the Cobbers scored three unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the second period. Mark Schiller started it when he tipped Andy Crook's shot from the left point past McIntosh. That was followed by Mike Gast's rebound after Brian Nelson's breakaway and Travis Rybchinski's rocket from the left circle.

Roland Blumer pulled the visitors within 4-2 on a breakaway at 18:54, Cobbers defenseman Kori Pearson responded with a key goal just 16 seconds later. He came charging through the left circle and converted a pass from Putt for a 5-2 lead.
"The backchecker took Ken and he was able to get it to me for a quality shot," Pearson said. "It was a pretty wide-open period against them. I thought this was going to be another tight game after that first period."
Clairmont capped the dance of the defensemen in the third period when he walked in untouched from the right point and snapped a wicked backhand past McIntosh. That made it 6-2.
"I don't think we can count on scoring seven goals against them," Knutson said. "We're going to have make sure we play good solid defense first and then see what happens. I'm sure they're going to come at us really hard."
