MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/26/00) -- Jon Tranby made two attempts at playing hockey for Augsburg, never quite making it through a full season. Both sides eventually -- and graciously -- agreed to go their separate ways.
Unfortunately for the Auggies, their lines crossed paths in a big way Saturday night.
Tranby, who came home to Moorhead and caught on with Concordia, scored what proved to be the series-clinching goal to lift the Cobbers to a 3-2 victory in the finale of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff.
The win gave Concordia a clean sweep of the two-game series.
"It means a lot to me to beat them, just because I'm so familiar with their program and I know so many people," Tranby said. "I don't have any bad feelings or anything like that."
Tranby's goal came after the Auggies came storming back in the third period to tie the game 2-2. Because Concordia won the series opener, Augsburg needed to win Saturday to force a 15-minute mini-game the Cobbers were desperate to avoid.
"The team that wins Saturday obviously goes into the mini-game with a lot of momentum," said Concordia junior Mike Gast. "We showed that last year when we lost 10-2 on Friday (to St. John's) and came back to win the Saturday game and mini-game. So it was getting interesting there in the third period."
Tranby scored with 2:58 left when he intercepted a clearing pass inside the Augsburg zone, leaving him alone on goaltender
Ryan McIntosh. When McIntosh came out to challenge Tranby, the former Auggie blew away everybody in the building with a whirlwind move.
Tranby cut around McIntosh, avoiding the goalie's poke check, and knocked the puck in with one hand.
"He had been coming out and poking the puck away all night," said Tranby, noting that McIntosh foiled two Cobbers breakaways in that fashion. "That was probably in the back of my mind because my first thought was to shoot it right away."
Cobbers senior defenseman Rob Gramer laughed when someone suggested that Tranby may not be able to pull off that move in 9 out of 10 tries.
"Then I'm glad he picked the one time to do it," Gramer said.
"It was just an awesome move. We're all really happy that he was the guy to score the game-winning goal. He works so hard and he's a great team player."
After winning 7-2 on Friday, the Cobbers picked up where they left off by dominating the first two periods. But McIntosh, who made 32 saves in the that span, Concordia could only forge a 2-0 lead.
Brady Burgess, who was one for two on breakaways, scored the first goal at 7:15 of the second period when he skated in alone and scored off the right post. It caused a delayed reaction by the goal judge.
"I didn't see it go in," Burgess said. "But they counted it so it must have."
Gast gave the Cobbers a 2-0 lead at 8:51 of the middle period when he scored on the power play. It was set up by quick passes, the last one from Gramer to Gast at the left circle, where a one-time beat McIntosh on the short side.
After getting outshot 34-13 in the first two periods, the Auggies came out hopping in the final period.
Mike Jackson scored on a scrum in front at 6:15 and
Roland Blumer scored from the right post on the power play at 10:01 to tie the game.
Augsburg followed up with two or three golden chances on Concordia goalie Bryan Howard.
"I know a lot has been said about McIntosh and I was there when they recruited him from major juniors in Canada," Tranby said. "But there's no doubt in my mind that Howie is the best goalie in the league."
Said Burgess, "(McIntosh) tends to be a little hot and cold, but Howie is steady and there for us all the time."
The Cobbers advance to the MIAC finals for the second straight year. They will play the winner of the St. John's-St. Thomas series which begins today on Friday.
"It has been a long wait for this," said Cobbers coach Steve Baumgartner. "This was a good series for us, I thought we came out pretty well both nights. I give credit to Augsburg for the way they came back in the third period. That's what pride is all about."
