Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (2/4/00) -- Blade Metzer (Fr., Coleraine, Minn.) deflected a shot from the side of the net off of Augsburg College goalie
Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) with four seconds left Friday night, giving Hamline University a 5-4 win over host Augsburg in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
The win broke Hamline's 45-game MIAC regular-season losing streak. The Pipers' last win in conference regular-season play was a 3-2 home win over St. Olaf on Feb. 14, 1997. Earlier this year, the Pipers had claimed their first conference point in MIAC play since the 1997 win with a 3-3 tie against St. Olaf on Jan. 14.
Hamline improved to 5-13-2 overall and 1-9-1 in the MIAC, while Augsburg dropped to 6-10-4 overall and 4-4-3 in the MIAC. The two teams complete their series on Sunday (2/6) at 3 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul, Minn.
Hamline, which led 3-2 at the end of two periods, allowed two Augsburg goals in the final frame before scoring twice in the last 1:24 of regulation to pick up the win. Troy Kleven (Fr., Crookston, Minn.) scored a power-play goal from Perry Smiley (Fr., Bovey, Minn.) with 1:24 left to tie the game at 4-4, setting the stage for Metzer's game-winner on an assist from Luke Spannbauer (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.).
Kleven, Peter Contardo (Fr., Spokane, Wash.) and Brice Parks (Fr., Eagle River, Alaska) each had a goal and assist for the Pipers, while Spannbauer had two assists.
Augsburg got goals from
Andrew Shermoen (Jr., International Falls, Minn.),
Andy Ness (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS),
Jake Wegscheider (So., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Henric Lindgren (Fr., Gnesta, Sweden/St. Paul, Minn., Academy), with
Joe Johnson (So., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) adding two assists.
Brian Maxwell (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) made 35 saves to pick up the win for the Pipers in goal, while McIntosh stopped 34 shots in a losing effort.
