MINNEAPOLIS (3/10/00) --
Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) came up with 37 saves in goal for Augsburg College on Friday night, as the Auggies claimed a 4-1 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in the first game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey playoff championship series at Augsburg Ice Arena.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 20-5-1 and takes a 1-0 advantage in the two-game/minigame series. The Auggies need a win or tie in Saturday's (3/10) playoff finale, set for 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, to win the playoff championship and advance to the AWCHA Division III National Championship series in Boston, Mass., March 24-25. Gustavus, now 18-9-1 overall, must win Saturday's game and also claim a win in a subsequent 15-minute minigame (or sudden death overtime if it remains tied) in order to advance to the national series.
Schmidt faced a busy night in the Auggie nets, as Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 38-24 margin. But only one goal, by Gustavus' Michelle Zaske (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.) early in the third period, found its way past Schmidt in the contest.
Augsburg jumped out to a 1-0 advantage on
Sarah Garrison's (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) 18th goal of the season, a power-play tally at the 7:49 mark of the first period.
Cindy Drum (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS) scored an unassisted tally midway through the second period to give the Auggies a lead they would not relinquish.
After Zaske's goal, the Auggies claimed a power-play goal from MIAC Player of the Year
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) at the 5:59 mark to notch a two-goal lead. The Auggies capped the scoring on a goal from
Amber Nadreau (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian HS) at the 13:32 mark.
Garrison had a goal and assist for the Auggies, while
Erica Johnson (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) had two assists. Nicole Guimond (Fr., Orono, Minn.) assisted on Zaske's goal for the Gusties. Jennifer Cannon (So., Sioux City, Iowa) made 20 saves in a losing effort for Gustavus.
