MINNEAPOLIS (3/11/00) -- Seniors
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) and
Annie Simons (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) scored goals for Augsburg College Saturday night, lifting Augsburg to a 2-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus College in the second game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey playoff championship series at Augsburg Ice Arena.
With the win and the sweep of the two-game/minigame series (Augsburg won 4-1 on Friday), Augsburg (21-5-1 overall) advances to the American Women's College Hockey Alliance Division III National Championship series in Boston, Mass., March 24-25, to face Middlebury (Vt.), the Eastern College Athletic Association Division III champion, in a two-game/minigame series. Gustavus finishes 18-10-1 overall.
After allowing a goal late in the first period by Linnea Carlson (So., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS), the Auggies scored goals in each of the next two periods to secure the series sweep and the trip to the national finals. Miller's goal came on a blast from the middle point at the 15:19 mark of the second period off an assist from
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS), and Simons' game-winning goal came on a shot from the slot on a feed from
Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) at the 13:17 mark of the third stanza.
The key to the game, however, was the play of Auggie goalie
Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), who stopped 26 of the 27 shots she faced in the game, including 17 in the last two periods as the Gusties outshot the Auggies for the second game in a row, this one by a 27-23 margin. In the two-game sweep, Schmidt stopped 62 of the 64 Gustie shots she faced.
Carrie Stefaniak (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Ann Marie Giefer (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had assists for the Gusties on Carlson's first-period goal. Jennifer Cannon (So., Sioux City, Iowa) made 21 saves for the Gusties.
Augsburg's two-game/minigame AWCHA Division III national championship series against Middlebury will be held March 24-25 at Northeastern University's Matthews Arena in Boston. Games will be held at 2 p.m. on March 24 and 12 noon on March 25, preceeding the games of the AWCHA's Division I national championship "Final Four."
