Men's Soccer 9/12/00 -- Augsburg 4, Buena Vista (Iowa) 0
MINNEAPOLIS (9/12/00) -- Jaroslav Cesky (So., Prague, Czech Rep.) and
Matt Lachner (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) had two goals apiece to lead Augsburg College to its first men's soccer shutout victory since 1998, a 4-0 nonconference triumph over Buena Vista University (Iowa) on Tuesday night at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
The Auggies' shutout victory was its first since a 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Superior on Nov. 1, 1998. Augsburg is now 2-3 overall, while Buena Vista drops to 3-3 overall.
Gustavo Quintiliano * (Sr., Brasilia, Brazil) picked up the shutout in the nets, making nine saves for Augsburg.
Cesky, an All-MIAC men's hockey player who joined the soccer team late in the fall camp, scored both his goals in a seven-minute span in the first half, the first on a rebound from a shot from
Steve Gehrman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS), the second on a free kick from 35 yards out.
Lachner scored his goals in a 10-minute mark late in the second half, the first on a give-and-go from
Nate Shill (Fr., Eau Claire, Wis./EC North HS) and the second on a feed from
Carlos Martinez * (Sr., Bogota, Colombia). Lachner now has a team-high 10 points (four goals, two assists) on the season; Shill now has nine points (four goals, one assist).
Augsburg outshot Buena Vista by a 16-14 margin. T.J. Bryan (Fr., Stuart, Iowa) made six goals in a losing effort for Buena Vista.
Augsburg returns to action facing Lakeland (Wis.) College on Saturday (9/16) at 10 a.m. at Edgewood College in Madison, Wis. The Auggies play at Edgewood on Sunday (9/17) at 2:30 p.m.
