Football 9/30/00 -- St. Olaf 28, Augsburg 6

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/30/00) -- Manuel Spreigl (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, leading host St. Olaf College to a dominating 28-6 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game at Manitou Field.

With the win, St. Olaf improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC.

The Oles dominated in nearly every facet of the game to claim the win and break a three-season losing streak to the Auggies. St. Olaf outgained the Auggies by a 341-216-yard margin, including 213 rushing yards to Augsburg's 67.

Two of Spreigl's touchdowns capped long scoring drives for the Oles in the first half, as they held the ball for 37 minutes, 25 seconds and 70 plays to Augsburg's 22:35 and 59 plays. Spreigl's first touchdown, a 1-yard run with 6:45 to play in the first quarter, capped a 13-play, 75 yard, 6:15 drive; his second score, a 6-yard run at the 2:36 mark of the second quarter, ended a 12-play, 51-yard, 6:23 drive.

Spreigl's final touchdown, a 67-yard run with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter, broke the game wide open in favor of the Oles. The Oles' other score came on a 40-yard pass from Brian Senske (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) to Steve Ryan (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) at the 5:47 mark of the third period.

Augsburg could manage just two field goals from Matt Van Alstine (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS), a career-best 46-yarder to close the first half, and a 30-yarder early in the fourth period.

Spreigl had 199 rushing yards on 24 carries, accounting for all but 14 of St. Olaf's rushing yards. Senske completed nine of 14 passes for 128 yards, including four passes for 68 yards to Ryan.

The Oles took advantage of outstanding field position in the first half to build a 14-3 halftime advantage. St. Olaf's average field-position start in the first half was at its own 45-yard line; in comparison, Augsburg averaged a start at its own 19 in the first half, including two drives starting inside the Augsburg 6-yard line.

Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) completed 15 of 29 passes for 149 yards to lead the Auggies. Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 14 carries for 64 yards, and Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had four recpetions for 61 yards.

Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (three solo), while Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had nine tackles (four solo) and Kurt Werk (Sr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had eight (five solo). Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) led the Auggies with two sacks.

Matt Lafferty had 11 tackles (four solo) for the Oles, while James Struble sacked Augsburg quarterbacks twice.

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (1-2 overall, 1-1 MIAC) travel to face the St. Olaf College Oles (2-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m., at Manitou Field (5,000 capacity) in Northfield, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 10th season and currently has a 47-47 career mark. St. Olaf coach Paul Miller (Minnesota-Morris '72) is in his fourth season and has a 9-24 career mark.
RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season. St. Olaf radio coverage is on KYMN-AM 920 in Faribault, Minn., with Mike Morrisey and Gordy Kosfeld on the call.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped a 40-7 decision at St. John's University last Saturday, while St. Olaf notched its first conference win of the year with a 28-18 triumph at Hamline.
SERIES: St.Olaf leads the all-time series 31-11, but the Auggies have won the last three games in a row in the series -- 30-27 last year (Sept. 25, 1999) at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field, 31-24 at St. Olaf on Sept. 26, 1998 and 42-0 on Sept. 27, 1997. St. Olaf's last win in the series was a 30-27 triumph on Sept. 28, 1996 at St. Olaf. Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is 6-3 in his career against the Oles.
LAST YEAR: Despite giving up 482 yards of total offense to St. Olaf, Augsburg was able to claim a 30-27 win over St. Olaf on Sept. 25, 1999 at Anderson-Nelson Field. The Auggies built an early 23-9 lead in the fourth quarter, as Paul Tetzloff was able to connect with Mark Johnson on a pair of touchdown passes. Tetzloff had a touchdown of his own on a one-yard plunge in the first quarter. But the Oles clawed back, as Cordell Hutchins scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Hakkon Nelson connected on a 22-yard field goal. Brian Sprout had a 52-yard scoring pass from quarterback Joe Hammond. But Augsburg capped the win on a seven-yard run by Brian Warden with 1:48 remaining. St. Olaf got a late touchdown in the final minute on a pass from Hammond to Manuel Spriegl, but the issue was already decided. Warden led the Auggies with 76 yards rushing on 26 carries, while Tetzloff completed 20 of 39 passes for 297 yards. Augsburg's defense was opportunistic, forcing five Ole turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles). Kurt Werk led the Auggies with 13 tackles and Rob Just had two interceptions.
AUGGIES SLAMMED IN COLLEGEVILLE: Taking advantage of three turnovers and several big plays, St. John's University rolled to a 40-7 victory over Augsburg College before 4,200 fans last Saturday at SJU's Clemens Stadium. St. John's won despite holding the ball for just 16 minutes, 46 seconds and only 46 offensive plays, compared to Augsburg's 43:14 and 83 offensive plays. The Johnnies amassed 253 yards of total offense (227 passing, 26 rushing), compared to Augsburg's 211 (165 passing, 46 rushing). However, the Johnnies scored once on an interception return and took advantage of two other Auggie turnovers and later converted them for scores, leading to the blowout victory. St. John's has won 19 of the last 21 meetings between the two schools. Augsburg has not won at St. John's since 1980; Auggies' last win in the series came at home in 1997. Despite controlling the ball for most of the game, Augsburg's offense failed to produce points. Augsburg only had 14 first downs and converted only seven of 23 third-down opportunities. Augsburg was forced to punt 11 times in the game.
Augsburg opened the scoring by converting a 13-play, 72 yard drive that consumed 7:47 of the clock. A three-yard scoring pass from Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to John Rotter (Sr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) capped the drive. The drive included a fourth-down conversion pass from Tetzloff to Ryan Hupka (Sr., Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick's HS) to the St. John's six-yard line. It marked the first time this season that St. John's had trailed to start a game. However, St. John's struck quickly, scoring at the 2:17 mark to tie the game on a 57-yard pass from Tom Linnemann (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) to Jeremy Forsell (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS), as Forsell beat the Augsburg secondary on a pass down the sideline.
Early in the second quarter, Augsburg turned the ball over on a fumble, and the Johnnies took advantage, taking the lead on a six-yard touchdown pass from Linneman to Chris Moore (Sr., Edina, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS). The Johnnies would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the game. Another turnover led directly to a Johnnie score, as Will Gibson (Sr., Winona, Minn./Cotter HS) picked off a Tetzloff pass and ran 45 yards for the touchdown. Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) forced Gibson to fumble the ball, but Gibson fell on it in the end zone for the touchdown. The Johnnies never looked back after that, cruising to the easy victory.
Tetzloff threw for 146 yards, completing 15 of 32 passes, while Linnemann completed 10 of 17 passes for 149 yards. Desman Oakley (Sr., Indianola, Iowa) had 58 receiving yards on four catches to lead the Auggies. Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggies with five tackles (four solo) and two sacks, moving him into fifth place in school history in career sacks with 15.5. The school record, set by Bob Anderson (1992-95), is 28.5.
RUSHING DEFENSE RATED 14TH IN NATION, TOPS IN MIAC: One of the bright spots this season has been the play of Augsburg's defensive front seven, which has neutralized rushing attacks in the first three weeks of the season. Entering Saturday's game, the Auggies are 14th-ranked nationally, among NCAA Division III schools, in rushing defense, allowing just 55.0 rushing yards per contest (165 yards on 78 carries, a 2.1-yards-per-carry average).
Through two league games, Augsburg's defense is rated second in the MIAC, allowing 255.0 yards per game. St. John's leads with a 236 yards allowed average. Augsburg has allowed just 84 rushing yards on 40 carries in conference play to lead the league through two confeference games. The passing defense is rated fifth (tied with Bethel) in the MIAC, allowing 213 yards per game.
Cornerback Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) leads the Auggie defense with 18 tackles (16 solo) and one interception, while fellow defensive backs Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and Luke Wittrock (Jr., Boone, Iowa) have 16 tackles each. Linebacker Kurt Werk (Sr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) has 14 tackles. Defensive lineman Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) leads the team with three sacks and four tackles for loss, while fellow lineman Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) has two sacks.
RECORD-WATCHING: Running back Brian Warden has moved into the top five in two Augsburg career rushing categories, and could become just the fourth Auggie to rush for 2,000 career yards this season. He enters Saturday's game with 209 rushing yards on 66 carries. On his career, Warden has 374 carries for 1,345 yards, putting him in fourth place all-time in career carries and fifth all-time in career rushing yards.
Wayne Graves set the career carries mark at Augsburg from 1970-73 with 497, while Marty Alger set the career rushing yardage mark with 2,226 yards from 1991-95. Warden set Augsburg's single-season rushes record with 232 carries last year, while his 858 rushing yards were fifth-best in school history (Alger's 1,011 rushing yards in 1992 is the school single-season record). Warden has eight career rushing touchdowns; the career record, 18, was set by Dan Roff from 1978-81.
Quarterback Paul Tetzloff now has 4,338 career yards entering Saturday's game. He is now third in school history in career passing yardage, fourth in career pass completions (339), sixth in career pass attempts (575) and second in career passing touchdowns (32). Current quarterbacks coach Derrin Lamker (1993-97) holds all of Augsburg's career passing records -- 1,022 passing attempts, 550 completions, 6,624 yards and 46 touchdowns. Tetzloff enters Saturday's games with 38 completions on 73 attempts with two interceptions and one touchdown for 387 passing yards this season.
SCOUTING THE OLES: St. Olaf coach Paul Miller, entering his fourth season in Northfield, finally has a veteran team to deal with. as a strong corps of returners have guided the Oles to a 2-1 record entering Saturday's game. The Oles put together their strongest offensive performance of the season in a 28-18 win at Hamline last Saturday, amassing 508 yards of total offense, including 246 yards on the ground. Tailback Manuel Spreigel (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.)has been the target of most of the attention for the Ole offense, as he has rushed fior 341 yards this season (113.7 yards per game) on 75 carries. He had 34 rushes for 174 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over Hamline. Spreigel has five of the team's eight touchdowns this season.
Meanwhile, a change of starting quarterbacks has been a relatively seamless one. After Joe Hammond (Jr., Neillsville, Wis.) was injured in the Oles' 42-6 loss to St. John's in the second game, freshman Brian Senske (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) filled in and has been tabbed by Miller as the starting quarterback on Saturday. In his first collegiate start last week against Hamline, Senske threw for 262 yards, completing 17 of 28 passes with no interceptions. Zach Kent (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Steve Ryan (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) have been the key receivers for the Oles.
Defensive back Doug Wolgamot (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) leads the team with 29 tackles (16 solo) and three interceptions, while safety Dan Meyers (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) has 21 tackles and two sacks. Linebacker Jason Carlson (Sr., Virginia, Minn.) leads the team with three sacks and two tackles for loss to go with his 18 tackles.
St. Olaf enters the game averaging 393.3 yards of total offense, while the defense has allowed an average of 361.3 yards per game. In conference play, the Oles are fifth in total offense (384.5 yards per game) and ninth in total defense (399.5 yards per game).
