Men's Basketball 1/15/01 -- St. Olaf 82, Augsburg 76
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/15/01) -- Matt Schlenker (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds, leading host St. Olaf College to an 82-76 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Monday night at the Skoglund Center.
St. Olaf improves to 4-9 overall and 2-7 in the MIAC with the victory, breaking an eight-game, four-season losing streak to the Auggies. Augsburg drops to 8-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play, breaking a five-game winning streak. The loss was just Augsburg's second in its last 10 games. Augsburg remains in a first-place tie with Gustavus Adolphus in the MIAC, as the Gusties also were upset on Monday, falling 73-72 at home to Bethel.
The Oles used strong shooting to dominate the first half, taking a 44-28 advantage into the locker room, and while the Auggies outscored the Oles 48-38 in the second half, it was not enough. St. Olaf hit 7-of-11 shots from three-point range (63.6 percent) and hit 53.3 percent of their field-goal attempts (16-of-30) in the first half. For the game, the Oles hit 54.5 percent of their field goals (30-of-55) and 61.5 percent of their three-point shots (8-of-13). Meanwhile, the Auggies shot 45.5 percent from the field (25-of-55) and 39.1 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-23).
Mike Ludwig (So., Blaine, Minn.) scored 15 points and had seven rebounds for the Oles, while Hallie Williams (Sr., Fort Worth, Texas) had 12 points (connecting on 4-of-4 field goals and 3-of-3 three-pointers. Kevin Juanich (So., Delano, Minn.) scored 10 points and Ryan Olson (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) scored nine.
Augsburg was paced by four players in double figures, led for the third game in a row by
Travis Hinze (Sr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS), who had 18 points. He hit four 3-pointers in the game.
Nick Ivory (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis./Washington HS) scorred 14 points, and
Tommy Chatman (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Jordan HS) and Jeff Willihinganz (Fr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) had 10 points apiece.
Matt Davis (Sr. Marshall, Minn.) had nine points and nine rebounds.
Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Wednesday (1/17) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Bethel at Si Melby Hall. St. Olaf returns to play on Saturday (1/20), hosting Carleton at 3 p.m.
