Women's Basketball 1/17/01 -- Augsburg 79, Bethel 78 (OT)
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (1/17/01) --
Rachael Ekholm (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) hit a field goal in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime, and
Jaime Kingsley (Sr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) claimed the game-winning basket with a field goal with one second left in overtime, as Augsburg College to its third overtime victory in its last four games, a 79-78 overtime victory over Bethel College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Wednesday night at Bethel's Robertson Center.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 7-6 overall and 7-5 in the MIAC. The seven wins for Augsburg tops last season's win total (6-19), marking just the fifth time Augsburg's women's basketball team has won seven games in a season since the 1986-87 campaign, 15 seasons. The seven wins are the most for Augsburg since the 1997-98 season (8-17). Bethel drops to 2-10 overall and 2-7 in MIAC play.
Augsburg has won seven of its last nine games. Augsburg topped St. Olaf 90-89 in three overtimes on Monday and beat St. Catherine 90-83 in one overtime last Wednesday.
Trailing 66-62 with 20 seconds remaining in the second half, the Auggies scored twice to force the overtime session. Kingsley got a field goal with 11 seconds left, and after two free throws were missed by Bethel, Ekholm scored and was fouled at the second-half buzzer to tie the game at 66-66. She missed her free throw, however, which forced the extra session.
In the final 10 seconds of overtime, the teams quickly traded baskets.
Jennie LaManna (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) scored for the Auggies with eight seconds left, but Bethel's Laura Jacobs (Jr., Wells, Minn./United South Central HS) got a basket on an assist from Beth Carlson (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) to give the hosts a 78-77 lead. But Kingsley scored the game-winner for the Auggies to give them their second-straight one-point victory.
Augsburg's
Kelly Chapman (Fr., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) led all scorers with 21 points, five assists and eight steals. She had eight of Augsburg's 19 steals in the game, the fourth-most steals in a single game in school history. Kingsley also had eight steals earlier this year, in a 63-35 win over Hamline on Dec. 9. The school's single-game steals record is 11, set by Trudy Fairbanks in a 1983 win over Carleton.
Bethel led the Auggies 30-25 at halftime, but the Auggies outscored Bethel 41-36 in the second half to force overtime, tied at 66-66. Augsburg outscored Bethel by a 13-12 mark in the extra session.
Erin Brockberg (Sr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS) had 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Auggies, while Ekholm had 11 points, four assists and four steals and
Rowena Sizer (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had 10 points and six rebounds. Kingsley had six points and seven rebounds, and
Allison Illa (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) also had six points.
Bethel was paced by Jacobs, who had a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Kristin Lundeen (So., Becker, Minn.) had 17 points, Erin Kramer (So., Freeman, S.D./Freeman Academy HS) scored 13 and Carlson notched 11 points, four assists and nine rebounds.
Bethel returns to action on Saturday (1/20), hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. Augsburg has a week off before its next game, playing at Carleton next Wednesday (1/24) at 5:30 p.m.
