Men's Hockey 1/20/01 -- Concordia-Moorhead 1, Augsburg 0
MINNEAPOLIS (1/20/01) -- Andy Crook's (So., Elk River, Minn.) first-period goal put Concordia College-Moorhead in an early lead, and goalie Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, Calif./Brooks HS) made it stand with a 22-save shutout, as Concordia topped host Augsburg College 1-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Concordia, the defending MIAC playoff champion and current conference leader, moves to 8-6-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the MIAC with the victory and a split of the weekend series. Augsburg dropped to 6-9-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the MIAC.
Concordia outshot Augsburg by a 36-22 margin and controlled the action for most of the afternoon, limiting the Auggies to just eight shots on goal in the first period and three shots in the second. While Howard notched his second shutout of the season for the Cobbers, just one shot got past Auggie goalie
Ryan McIntosh (Sr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS), as he made 35 saves. The two senior goalies are considered the top netminders in the MIAC.
Crook's goal, his first of the season, came on an assist from Aaron Marsh (So., Summerland, British Columbia) at the 5:28 mark. Both teams had numerous breakaway chances to score goals after that, but the two goalies denied every opportunity.
The game was a relatively clean affair, with the teams each whistled for five penalties for 10 minutes.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a two-game series against Hamline. Friday's (1/26) game is at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul, Minn. at 7 p.m., and Saturday's (1/27) game is at the Augsburg Ice Arena, also at 7 p.m. Concordia hosts St. John's in a two-game MIAC series Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
