Men's Hockey 1/5/01 -- Lake Forest (Ill.) 4, Augsburg 3 (OT)
MINNEAPOLIS (1/5/01) -- Adrian Wong (Fr., Richmond, British Columbia) scored the first and last goals of the game Friday, lifting his Lake Forest College men's hockey team to a 4-3 overtime victory over host Augsburg College in a nonconference game at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Wong's goal, on assists from Dan Holmes (Jr., Whitby, Ontario) and Frankie DeMasi (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) at the 2:13 mark of overtime, gave the Foresters the victory and a 7-4-2 overall record on the season. Augsburg, which dropped its second overtime loss at home this season, fell to 5-7-0 overall.
Lake Forest broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period, when Andrew Jay (Jr., Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) put a shot past Auggie goalie
Ryan McIntosh (Sr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS). But the Auggies tied the game with 2:46 remaining in regulation time, when
Andy Ness (Sr., North St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) lit the lamp on assists from
Jake Wegscheider (Jr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Mike Jackson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS).
After Wong scored the game-opening goal just 1:04 into play, Augsburg took a 2-1 lead with two goals in a 42-second span of the final minute of the first period.
Jaro Cesky (So., Prague, Czech Republic) and
Joe Pontrelli (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) provided the goals for the Auggies, Pontrelli's his first collegiate goal. Matt Bruni (So., Unionville, Ontario) scored for Lake Forest just 41 seconds into the second period to tie the game at 2-2.
Lake Forest outshot Augsburg by a 44-38 margin. Mason Black (Sr., Smith Falls, Ontario) made 35 saves to score the win for Lake Forest, while McIntosh made 40 saves in a losing effort.
The two teams complete their Northern Collegiate Hockey Association/Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference "interlocking" schedule on Saturday (1/6). Augsburg hosts St. Norbert (Wis.) at 7 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena, and Lake Forest plays at Bethel College at 8 p.m. at Columbia Ice Arena in Fridley, Minn.
