NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/6/01) --
Stephanie Johnson (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) scored four goals and
Angie Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) had two goals and two assists, leading Augsburg College to a 10-1 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday night at the Northfield Ice Arena.
Augsburg improves to 4-6-0 overall and 4-4 in MIAC play with the win. St. Olaf drops to 1-10-0 overall and 1-6 in MIAC play.
The game was virtually a mirror of Thursday's 10-1 Auggie victory, as the Auggies allowed St. Olaf to score an early goal, then dominated play the rest of the way. Johnson scored her first goal of the game just 28 seconds into play, and after Nadia Nickerson (Jr., Powell, Wyo.) scored the Oles' lone goal, Augsburg poured it on. Rieger notched her first goal of the game at the 14:51 mark.
The Auggies scored five goals in the second period -- Johnson scoring twice and
Laura McGowan (Jr., Fridley, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scoring twice., and
Annie Mattison (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/East HS) adding a goal. Rieger,
Amber Nadreau (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian HS) and Johnson scored in the final frame.
Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 55-8 margin, the most shots on goal Augsburg has had in a single game this season. In the two-game series, Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 103-12 margin.
Kristen Opalinski (So., Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe HS) made seven saves to pick up her first collegiate victory in goal for the Auggies, while Amanda Chumbley (So., Menomonee Falls, Wis.) made 45 saves in goal for the Oles.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a two-game series against Gustavus Adolphus. Friday's (1/12) game is at Lund Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn. at 7 p.m., and Saturday's (1/13) game is at Augsburg Ice Arena at 2:05 p.m. St. Olaf returns to action with a two-game series at Concordia-Moorhead, Friday tat 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
