Men's Soccer 10/27/01 -- St. John's 2, Augsburg 1
MINNEAPOLIS (10/27/01) -- Tyler Bosch (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) and Craig Hiserich (Fr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) scored goals in a 10-minute span of the second half, leading St. John's University to a come-from-behind, 2-0 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg scored the first goal of the game in the third minute, when
Mike Elcano (Fr., Sparks, Nev./Bishop Manogue HS) hit a blast from the right side on a feed from
Hugo Quintiliano (Jr., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka, Minn., HS).
However, after the Auggie scoring tally, St. John's took over the flow of the game, keeping the ball in the Augsburg end for most of the contest. St. John's outshot Augsburg by a 18-11 margin, with Auggie goalie
Nick Shill (So., Eau Claire, Wis./North HS) making several dramatic saves to keep the game close. He ended up having eight saves in the contest.
The Johnnies finally scored on Shill in the 58th minute, when Bosch weaved his way through the right side and crossed a shot past Shill to the left post. Ten minutes later, Andy Witchger (Fr., Edina, Minn.) popped a pass on the right side of the penalty box and over Shill's head, which Hieserich found across the goal mouth. He put the ball in the net for the eventual game-winner.
Kevin Bell (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling HS) made three saves in the goal for the Johnnies.
St. John's, now 13-4 overall and 7-2 in MIAC play, hosts St. John's on Wednesday (10/31) at 1 p.m. Augsburg, now 5-8-1 overall and 2-7 in MIAC play, hosts St. Thomas in a contest at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn., on Tuesday (10/30). Game time will be 3:30 p.m.
