MINNEAPOLIS (10/9/01) -- Danielle Schmiesing (Fr., Villard, Minn./Sauk Centre HS) had a double-double, with 11 kills and 12 digs, leading Concordia College-Moorhead to a three-game sweep of Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Tuesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall. Game scores were 30-28, 30-25, 30-21.
Concordia, a team dressing all freshmen (11) on Tuesday (the Cobbers have just one sophomore and 16 freshmen on their roster), had four players in double figures in kills in improving to 8-12 overall and 6-3 in MIAC play. Augsburg dropped its second match in a row and fifth in its last seven to fall to 7-13 overall and 4-5 in the MIAC.
Jackelyn Barten (Fr., Melrose, Minn.) had team highs of 14 kills and three blocks (one solo) to lead the Cobbers, including seven of the team's 19 in the final game. She hit a strong .440 attack percentage in the match (14 kills, three errors in 25 attempts).
Kris Sather (Fr., Fosston, Minn.) had 11 kills, hitting .381 (three errors in 21 attempts), while Andrea Dressel (Fr., Maple Plain, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) had 10 kills and nine digs. Jessica Walden (Fr., Hawley, Minn.) had 42 assists and 12 gids, and Ayla Donlin (Fr., Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) had 12 digs.
The first two games were back-and-forth affairs, with the Cobbers rallying from an 18-14 deficit in game one to tie it at 20-20. Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way. Barten, Schmiesing and Dressel had two kills apiece in the closing eight points for the Cobbers in the first game.
An 8-1 scoring run, punctuated by three service aces from
Alli Burgess (So., Soudan, Minn./Tower-Soudan HS), gave the Auggies a 12-9 advantage in the second game, but Concordia eventually tied the game and went ahead for good at 24-23, behind five kills from Schmiesing in the game and four from Dressel and Sather.
Concordia dominated the final game, trailing just once (12-11) before pulling away with a 5-1 run to take a commanding lead. In additon to Barten's seven kills in the game, Sather had four kills and Sheena Berg (Fr., Barnesville, Minn.) closed the match with two service aces.
Laura Wagner (Fr., West Bend, Wis./West Bend West HS) led the Auiggies with nine kills and 19 digs.
Amy Degner (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) had six kills, 23 assists and two blocks, while
Lisa Miller (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) and
Kelly Larvick (Jr., Good Thunder, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS) had five kills and two blocks (one solo) each.
Kristy Larson (Fr., Pine Island, Minn.) led all players with four blocks (one solo) to go with four kills.
Augsburg returns to action with nonconference matches at the University of St. Thomas Tournament on Friday and Saturday (10/12-13), before returning to MIAC action next Wednesday (10/17), hosting St. Olaf at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. Concordia returns to action next Wednesday, hosting Hamline at 7:30 p.m.
