Auggies notch 3-2 win over St. John's

MINNEAPOLIS (11/10/01) -- Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, as Augsburg College claimed a 3-2 win over St. John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.

Schwartzbauer scored a power-play goal in the first period as Augsburg built a 2-1 lead, then added an even-strength goal early in the third period as Augsburg led 3-1. The Auggies survived a late St. John's goal to improve to 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the MIAC. St. John's remains winless at 0-3-0, all in MIAC play.

Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) remained unbeaten on the season in goal for the Auggies, stopping 33 shots, including 13 in the third period as St. John's outshot Augsburg by a 35-32 margin.

David May (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) had two assists for the Auggies, while Mike Possin (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) had two assists for the Johnnies.

Joe Johnson (Sr., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) opened the scoring with a power-play goal with a power-play goal at the 11:37 mark of the third period. Kevin Willey (So., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) tied it for the Johnnies two minutes later, but Schwartzbauer added his first tally at the 16:56 mark. Augsburg was 2-for-2 in the first period on power plays.

Schwartzbauer scored his second goal at the 2:33 mark of the third period. The Johnnies' Shane Taylor (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) cut the Auggie lead to 3-2 with a goal at the 10:10 margin, but the Johnnies could edge no closer.

The game was a physical one for early in the MIAC season, as the teams combined for 22 penalties for 44 minutes.

The series concludes with a contest on Sunday (11/11) at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
