Men's Hockey 11/16/01 -- Augsburg 9, Minnesota-Crookston 7

MINNEAPOLIS (11/16/01) --
Jake Wegscheider (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) scored a three-goal hat trick, and
Jaro Cesky (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic) had two goals and two assists, leading Augsburg College to a 9-7 win over the University of Minnesota-Crookston in a nonconference men's hockey game Friday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Leading 7-1 after two periods, the Auggies were stunned as the Golden Eagles pulled their goalie and scored three extra-attacker, power-play goals in the final five minutes, 52 seconds to make the game close.
Augsburg improved to 3-1-1 overall with the win, while Crookston dropped to 1-5 overall with the loss.
Augsburg jumped out to a big lead, connecting on three-of-four power-play opportunities in the game.
Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored the first goal just 1:16 into the game, followed 12 seconds later by a goal from
David May (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.), his first collegiate goal. Also scoring their first collegiate goals for Augsburg were
Brad Keogh (Jr., Lake Shore, Minn./Mankato West HS) and
Brad Bjorgum (So., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS).
Wegscheider scored all three of his goals on the power play, one each period, as Augsburg eventually led by an 8-1 count 2:27 into the third period before the Golden Eagles rallied with six goals in the final 14:44. Augsburg's Cesky also had a shorthanded goal in the third period for the Auggies.
Crookston pulled its goalie on four separate occasions in the closing minutes, three resulting in goals on power plays.
Dustin Barton (Jr., Jamestown, N.D.), Ben Perkins (So., New Brighton, Minn.) and Jeff Johnston (Jr., Carman, Manitoba) had a goal and assist each for the Golden Eagles, while Brock Anundson (Fr., Baudette, Minn.) had two of the three extra-attacker goals in the closing minutes.
Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) had 37 saves for Augsburg, while Joey Reese (Fr., Crookston, Minn.) made 27 saves for Crookston.
The teams complete the two-game, nonconference series on Saturday (11/17) at 2 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena.
