Auggies top St. Benedict 6-3 for first MIAC win!

RICHMOND, Minn. (11/16/01) -- Jenny Martin (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored two goals and had an assist, while April Leger (Sr., Austin, Minn.) had a goal and two assists, leading Augsburg College to a 6-3 win over the College of St. Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at River-Lakes Ice Arena.

Martin opened the scoring on a goal from Leger in the first period, then capped the Auggie scoring in the second period with another goal from Leger. Leger's goal, from Martin, also came in the second period.

Augsburg moves to 2-3 overall, while St. Benedict drops to 0-4 overall. It was the first MIAC game for both teams.

Laura Hoffman (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) also scored in the second period for the Auggies, on assists from Melynda Kleewein (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) and Laura McGowan (Sr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS). McGowan opened the third period with a goal, on an assist from Kristi Brusletto (Sr., Basalt, Colo.), and Jen Mintz (Sr., Bradford, Pa.) capped the Auggie scoring on a goal from Corrie Krzyska (Fr., Fridley, Minn.).

St. Benedict's goals came from Anna Richardson (So., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), Shannon Kegley (Sr., Eagan, Minn./South St. Paul HS) and Sarah Miller (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.).

Augsburg outshot St. Benedict by a 42-25 margin, the first game this season that Augsburg has outshot an opponent. Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) made 22 saves to score the win, while Kate Hall (So., Calgary, Alberta/Dr. E.P. Scarlett HS) made 36 saves in a losing effort.

The teams complete the MIAC series with a game Saturday (11/17) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
