MINNEAPOLIS (11/17/01) -- Pouring three goals on the scoreboard in the first 14 minutes of play, the College of St. Benedict claimed its first-ever win over Augsburg College in women's hockey, with a 4-2 triumph in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg had won the previous 10 games in the all-time series (dating back to the 1997-98 season), including Friday night's opening game of the series. St. Benedict is now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play, while Augsburg drops to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC.
Susan Engel (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) opened the game for the Blazers with an unassisted goal at the 7:12 mark, followed by scoring tallies from Katy Rollwagen (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Visitation HS) and Anne Sawyer (So., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) in a 29-second span midway through the first period.
St. Benedict outshot Augsburg by a 27-18 margin through the first two periods, then held on as Augsburg took the momentum in the third period. The Auggies outshot the Blazers by an 18-7 mark in the final frame, and put two goals in the net in a 21-second span, from
Erika Horner (Fr., Arvada, Colo./Pomona HS) and
Dottie Gilkerson (Fr., Somerset, Wis.).
However, the Blazers closed the door on Augsburg's hopes for claiming a tie or win when Michaela Potts (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville HS) scored an unassisted goal with 3:13 remaining.
Nikki Schwartz (Fr., Bismarck, N.D.) made 34 saves -- including 16 in the third period -- to claim the win for St. Benedict in goal, while
Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.) made 30 saves in a losing effort for Augsburg.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (11/20) as part of a men's and women's hockey doubleheader with Wisconsin-Superior at Augsburg Ice Arena. The women's game is at 4:05 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 7 p.m. St. Benedict returns to action on Nov. 30, hosting Gustavus in the opener of a two-game MIAC series at 7:35 p.m.
