Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and
Amanda Haugen (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) each recorded double-doubles, as Augsburg College rallied for a 76-70, two-overtime win over Coe College (Iowa) in a nonconference women's basketball game Sunday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Chapman had 20 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the first double-double of her career, while Haugen contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Rowena Sizer * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and
Carrie Schwartz * (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) nearly had double-doubles for the Auggies, with Sizer connecting on 15 points and eight rebounds, and Schwartz scoring 10 points and pulling down nine rebounds.
It was the first game of the season for Augsburg, while Coe drops to 1-1 overall. The game was a close one throughout, with 11 ties and 14 lead changes.
Leading 30-29 at halftime, the Auggies pulled to their biggest lead of regulation time, nine points, with an 8-0 run to take a 38-29 lead with 16:01 left in the second half. But the Kohawks closed the gap and tied the game at 38-38 with 11:02 remaining on a 9-0 run. Neither team led by more than six points the remainder of regulation.
Both teams scored six points in the first overtime session, but Augsburg outscored Coe by a 12-6 margin in the second extra session. A 7-0 run over a 2:35 margin gave the Auggies the lead to stay, keyed by baskets from Haugen, Chapman and Sizer. Connecting on just 28.4 percent of its field goals through regulation (21-of-74), Augsburg hit on 7-of-13 shots (53.8 percent) in the two overtimes, while Coe was limited to 5-of-17 shooting from the field (29.4 percent).
Coe had four players in double figures in scoring, led by Jamie Dalbey (Sr., Ottuma, Iowa), who had 19 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Natalie Hibler (So., Danville, Iowa) and Kristen Leonard (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had 12 points and four rebounds each, and Elizabeth Estes (Jr., Middleton, Wis.) had 10 points. Jessi Lincoln (Sr., Colesburg, Iowa/Edgewood-Colesburg HS) scored nine points and had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Shannon Spears (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) scored eight points and had four assists and three steals for the Auggies, who claimed 16 steals in the contest. Schwartz and Chapman also had three steals. Augsburg also had 64 rebounds, the third-most in a single game in school history (the record, 73, was set in a 1996 game against Concordia-St. Paul).
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (11/24), hosting St. Scholastica (Minn.) as part of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at Si Melby Hall. The women's game is at 1 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 3 p.m. Coe returns to action on Saturday, hosting Wisconsin-Platteville at 6 p.m.
