Wisc.-Superior blitzes Augsburg for 8-4 win.

MINNEAPOLIS (11/20/01) -- Ryan Kalbrener (Jr., Grafton, N.D.) and Yann Poirier (Fr., Quebec City, Quebec) scored two goals apiece and the University of Wisconsin-Superior men's hockey team scored three goals in a 1:53 span of the first period, en route to an 8-4 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game Tuesday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

The Yellowjackets, ranked No. 9 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll, used the three-goal outburst to take a commanding lead in improving to 5-2-1 overall. Augsburg drops to 3-3-1 overall.

After Michael Wiggins (Fr., Calgary, Alberta) scored a quick goal just 41 seconds into the game, the Yellowjackets and Auggies combined for a four-goal outburst midway through the frame, with Superior claiming three goals. Rob Whidden (Fr., Coquitlam, British Columbia), Chris Hackett (Jr., Paradise, Newfoundland) and Kalbrener scored for the Yellowjcakets, with Frank Huebner (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) scoring for the Auggies. Poirier added his first goal of the game at the 19:42 mark, giving the Yellowjackets a 5-1 first-period advantage.

After Poirier scored his second goal of the game at the 3:39 mark, the Auggies began to edge back into the game, as Brad Bjorgum (So., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) scored twice, both coming on assists from Jake Wegscheider (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and Shawn Carney (Sr., International Falls, Minn.).

However, Superior secured the win with two shorthanded, unassisted goals in the final frame. Kalbrener netted his second goal of the game at the 6:41 mark, and after Carney cut the lead again with a goal for Augsburg from Huebner's assist, Colin Kendall (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) closed the scoring with a shorthanded, empty-net goal in the final minute.

Superior outshot Augsburg by a 19-6 margin in the first period and claimed a 37-35 total edge on shots. Nathan Ziemski (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) made 31 saves to score the win in goal for Superior, while Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) made 29 saves in a losing effort for the Auggies.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a two-game series against Gustavus Adolphus College on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The Friday, Nov. 30 game is at Gustavus at 7 p.m., with the Saturday, Dec. 1 game at Augsburg Ice Arena at 7 p.m. Superior returns to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play hosting Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Nov. 30 at 7:05 p.m.
