Women's Basketball 11/24/01 -- St. Scholastica 57, Augsburg 49

MINNEAPOLIS (11/24/01) -- Jackie Plesha (Fr., Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) had 14 points and five rebounds, scoring nine points in the second half as the College of St. Scholastica rallied for a 57-49 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Allison Sanderberg (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) added eight points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Saints, now 2-2 overall. Augsburg drops to 1-1 overall.
A 18-8 run over a nine-minute span in the second half gave the Saints a commanding 46-37 lead. Augsburg cut the lead to three points, 46-43, using a 6-0 run on two layups by
Rowena Sizer * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS). But the Saints pulled away on a 7-2 run to lead by eight points. St. Scholastica never trailed by six the rest of the way.
Amanda Norman (Jr., Mt. Iron, Minn.) had eight points for the Saints, as did Erin Flaherty (Fr., Belle Plaine, Minn.), who added three steals.
Augsburg was paced by Sizer, who had 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Jennie LaManna (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) had seven points each, and
Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) had six points and a game-high 12 rebounds, her second straight career high in rebounds. She also had four assists.
Carrie Schwartz * (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) also had six points.
The Auggies were hampered by a poor shooting day. The Auggies hit just 34.5 percent from the field (20-of-58) and hit just 34.5 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-23). St. Scholastica connected on 14 of its 22 free throws (63.6 percent).
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (11/27), playing a nonconference game at Northwestern-Roseville at 7:30 p.m. St. Scholastica plays at Wisconsin-River Falls on Sunday (11/25) at 1 p.m.
