Auggies drop MIAC opener at St. Thomas, 75-60.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/28/01) -- Senior center Alissa Case (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of St. Thomas (2-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) past visiting Augsburg College (1-3, 0-1) 75-60 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul.

Although it was UST's 33rd consecutive victory over Augsburg, it didn't come easy.

Case made 10-of-11 free throws and the Tommies sank 19-of-26 to Augsburg's 10-of-22.

Senior guard Missy Pederson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) added 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Tommies, who used a 19-3 run midway through the second half to pull away. Junior Beth Erickson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), playing her first game in Schoenecker Arena, added 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench for UST.

Sophomore forward Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) had 14 points and seven rebounds for Augsburg, which dropped its third game in a row. Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) came off the bench to score nine points, while Allison Illa * (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Tommies used a 10-0 run to close the first half with a 40-28 lead. The Auggies, despite battling foul trouble, answered with a 13-0 run to tie the game at 41-41 with 16:07 left.

The Tommies came back moments later with a 19-3 run over the next seven minutes to build a 64-47 lead with 6:27 left. Their biggest lead was 73-53 with 2:36 to play.

Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (12/1) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Carleton and St. Thomas playing at Bethel.
