ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (11/3/01) -- Taking advantage of eight Augsburg College turnovers, the Bethel College football team cruised to a 31-0 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bethel's Armstrong Stadium.

With the win, Bethel kept its hopes alive for a NCAA Division III national playoff berth, improving to 8-1 overall and 7-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in MIAC play. The Royals were shut out last week, 34-0 to St. John's, which hurt the Royals' chances for an automatic bid to the Division III national playoffs. However, Bethel is still in contention for one of three "Pool C" at-large bids to the 28-team national playoffs.

Bethel defenders picked off seven Augsburg passes, returning two for touchdowns. The Auggies also lost the ball once on a fumble. In the last two games, Augsburg has turned the ball over 15 times.

Bethel's defense was the key to the victory. Senior linebacker Ben Kidd (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) returned a 66-yard interception for a touchdown late in the third quarter, and junior strong safety Sam Lacy (Jr., Lewisville, Texas) returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Senior cornerback Nate Klint (Sr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) intercepted two Augsburg passes. Bethel allowed just 27 Augsburg rushing yards.

Augsburg used three quarterbacks, but none were effective, passing for a combined 136 yards, while falling victim to three sacks and seven interceptions. Starter Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) completed just eight of 21 passes for 52 yards and four pickoffs, while reliever Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) completed five of nine passes for 80 yards but was picked off twice. John Tieben (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) played most of the fourth quarter.

Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) caught eight passes for a game-high 97 yards for the Auggies. Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) led Auggie rushers with 29 yards on 15 carries.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bethel took a 19-0 lead in the second quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by freshman running back Jesse Dick (Fr., Munich, N.D.) and a 42-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Scott Kirchoff (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) to junior receiver Joel Olson (Jr., Becker, Minn.).

Bethel's offense, led by Kirchoff, produced 243 passing yards, with Olson catching six passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Augsburg's defense limited the Royals' offense, which entered the game third in the nation in total offense per game at 513.4 yards per game, to just 298 yards of total offense on Saturday, including just 55 rushing yards. Mike Johnson's (Jr., Pine City, Minn.) 28 rushing yards on 18 carries led the Royals.

Defensively, Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) had 7.5 tackles each (six solo each), with Matt Chappuis (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) and Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) adding 6.5 tackles each.

Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had three sacks for the Auggies, giving him 11.5 sacks on the season, the second-most in a single season in school history. The record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Adam Leiter (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) and Brandon Fox (So., Sanborn, Minn./Springfield HS) also had sacks.

Bethel's defense was paced by Randy Larson (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS), who had 6.5 tackles (five solo) and a sack, while Kidd also had 6.5 tackles (six solo). Jon Foss (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) had two sacks.

Augsburg finishes its season on Friday (11/9) at 1 p.m., hosting Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Bethel aims for a share of the MIAC title with an important game at St. Thomas at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul on Saturday (11/10) at 1 p.m.

Football 11/3/01 -- Augsburg at Bethel Game Notes

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (4-4 overall, 4-3 MIAC) play at the Bethel College Royals (7-1 overall, 6-1 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m., at Armstrong Stadium (4,000 capacity) in Arden Hills, Minn.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 11th season and currently has a 53-56 career mark. Bethel head coach Steve Johnson (Bethel '79) is in his 13th season at Bethel and has a 84-43-1 overall mark.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg claimed a 7-0 win at home over Hamline last Saturday, while Bethel suffered its first loss of the season, a 34-0 setback at St. John's, last Saturday.

SERIES: This is the 27th meeting in the all-time series between Augsburg and Bethel, a series the Auggies lead 13-10-3. The teams met in nonconference play three times (1949, 1953, 1954), and the teams have played every year since the Royals joined the MIAC in 1978. Bethel has won the last three games in a row in the series.

LAST YEAR: Putting together 352 yards of total offense, Bethel claimed its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football championship ever, staving off Augsburg 25-20 on Nov. 11, 2000 at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field. Scott Kirchoff completed 25 of 42 passes for 248 yards and two first-half touchdowns, as Bethel built a 15-7 halftime lead. Augsburg kept the game close throughout, taking advantage of two touchdown passes to Mark Johnson. But the Royals scored on each drive after an Augsburg score in the second half to clinch the victory. Kirchoff threw two first-half touchdown passes, a 10-yarder to Joel Olson (So., Becker, Minn.) in the first quarter and as six-yarder to Deon Jordan (Sr., Long Beach, Calif./Jordan HS) late in the second quarter.

The Royal scores bracketed a bit of trickery by the Auggies, as halfback Brian Warden threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Auggie quarterback Paul Tetzloff with 6:45 left in the first half. Trailing 15-7 in the third quarter, Augsburg put together a seven-play, 57-yard drive to score, capping the drive on a 29-yard pass from backup quarterback John Goodale to Johnson to cut the lead to 15-13. But just 1:14 later, the Royals surged ahead again, as Mike Johnson busted through the line for a 54-yard scoring scamper with 5:42 left. Augsburg scored late in the game, on a seven-yard pass from Tetzloff to Mark Johnson, but the Auggies could not convert the ensuing onside kick, and the Royals capped the scoring on a 28-yard field goal by Seth Olson and a subsequent interception by Ben Kidd.

Tetzloff had his best passing game of the season for the Auggies, completing 15 of 29 passes for 203 yards. However, he was intercepted twice. Goodale also threw two
interceptions. Ben Matthews scored two of the pickoffs for the Royals, giving him a nation-high 15 interceptions to complete the regular season. Mark Johnson had 113 receiving yards on six catches for the Auggies, while Desman Oakley had five catches for 81 yards in his final collegiate game. For the Royals, Mike Johnson had 94 rushing yards on 12 carries, capped by the 54-yard scoring scamper in the third quarter. Jordy Hage had eight catches for 60 yards. Jeff Bormes had 16 tackles (11 solo) to lead all players. Jon Foss and Kidd had 10 tackles apiece. Augsburg's defense was paced by Larry Lyden and Shane Gunderson, who had 10 tackles each. Joe Souba and Brent Peroutka had nine tackles each.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: It's been an up-and-down season for Augsburg, to say the least. The Auggies have alternated winning and losing each week, with impressive wins over Carleton (52-21), St. Olaf (20-0), Macalester (50-14) and Hamline (7-0) coupled with disappointing losses at Wisconsin-Eau Claire (37-14), against St. John's (48-14), at St. Thomas (34-14) at Gustavus (31-13).

Augsburg enters the game with the No. 3 defense, statistically, in the MIAC, averaging just 267.9 yards of total offense per game in league play, including the No. 2 defense against the pass (167.6 yards per game) and the No. 3 defense against the run (100.3 yards per game). On the other side of the ball, Augsburg's offense is ranked seventh in the league (333.6 yards per game), sixth in passing (185.9 yards per game) and fourth in rushing (147.7 yards per game).

On offense, quarterback Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.), in his first season as the team's full-time starter, has continued to develop his game, with the growing pains any newcomer to a position would have. He is averaging 151.0 yards passing per game, throwing 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions so far. Meanwhile, the offensive line has been solid, allowing just 21 sacks.

Auggie wide receivers have caught 14 touchdowns this season -- nine by Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.). He is averaging 90.1 receiving yards per game and enters the contest with 1,950 career receiving yards, third-best in school history (the record, 4,696, was set by Scott Hvistendahl from 1994-98). Jeff Kaeppe's 2,273 yards (1991-94) is second on the career list. Johnson has 110 career receptions in three seasons at Augsburg; he played his freshman year at South Dakota State. Johnson is currently fourth in the conference in receptions per game (5.71) and receiving yardage per game (92.4 yards in league play).

Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) has made a tremendous impact in a revamped Auggie backfield, with 508 rushing yards (98 carries) and six touchdowns. He is seventh in the conference in rushing, averaging 65.0 yards per game in league play. His rushing mate, T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) has 379 yards on 102 carries and three rushing TDs (five overall) and is 10th in the league in rushing (52.1 yards per game). Augsburg and Concordia are the only schools in the conference with two rushers in the top 10 statistically.

Linebacker Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) leads the team with 47.5 tackles (32 solo), while defensive back Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) has 45.5 (37 solo). Linebacker Scott Archambault (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has 34.0 tackles (19 solo) and defensive back and Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) has 34.0 (23 solo). The Auggie defensive backfield has picked off 13 passes, already more than last year's season total of eight. Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) leads the team with five pickoffs; the single-season school record is eight, set by Bill Kriesel in 1993. Peroutka has 11 career interceptions, the fourth-most in school history. Jeremy Dalluge's 17 (1992-95) is the school record. Lyden and Wittrock have two interceptions apiece.

The defensive line has claimed 22 sacks and 53 tackles for loss this year, led by Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.), who has 8.5 sacks (fifth-best in a single season in school history) and 11.5 tackles for loss. His sack total is 5.5 away from the single-season school record of 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Sherry is currently third in the MIAC in sacks, with 8.5 in league play. Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has two sacks this year, while Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.) has four -- including two last week against Hamline. Chappuis is currently third in school history in career sacks with 22.5; the career record is 28.5, set by Anderson from 1992-95, with Paul Moore (1994-97) second with 23.5 sacks.

On the injury front, Adam Leiter (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS), who has started at linebacker (WLB) this season, will miss Saturday's game with bruised ribs. Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), who started the season as a tight end before switching to defense three games into the season, will get the start. Wright played wide receiver for one season at Wisconsin-La Crosse and two seasons at Hamline before transferring to Augsburg.

AUGGIES CLAIM WEIRD 7-0 WIN AGAINST HAMLINE: Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) early in the third quarter, the only score Augsburg would need in claiming a 7-0 win over Hamline last Saturday at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field. The Auggies won despite turning the ball over seven times -- two interceptions and five fumbles. Augsburg has won the last six games in a row in the all-time series against Hamline, though the margin of victory in the six wins has averaged just 8.2 points.

Goodale, who replaced Augsburg starting quarterback Dave Fransen (So., Farmington, Minn.) midway through the second quarter, completed 14 of 24 passes with an
interception for 145 yards to lead the Auggies, who accumulated 330 yards of total offense in spite of the seven turnovers. Meanwhile, Augsburg's defense limited Hamline's offense to just 129 total yards -- 32 passing and 97 rushing -- and netted three interceptions, while collecting four quarterback sacks.

The Auggies' lone score came after Hamline turned the ball over as a pass on a fake punt attempt went incomplete. A 15-yard pass to Johnson put the ball on the Hamline 40-yard line, and a 23-yard rush by T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) placed the ball on the 17. A fumbled snap by Goodale was recovered by center Bob Eckstrom (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) at the Hamline 19, and two plays later, Goodale found Johnson on a sprint pattern to the corner of the end zone for the touchdown.

Johnson had eight catches for 98 yards to lead Augsburg's receivers, while Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) caught three passes for 36 yards. Ben Paul (So., St. Paul,
Minn./Johnson HS) led Augsburg's rushers with 90 yards on 17 carries, including a 37-yard rumble in the second quarter. Bramwell had 58 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.) led the Auggie defense with two sacks and 5.5 tackles (four solo). Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had 8.5 tackles (six
solo) and an interception, and Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 5.5 tackles (one solo). Joe Cullen (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Luke Wittrock (Sr.,
Boone, Iowa) also had interceptions for the Auggies, and Cullen and Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had a sack each. Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had a blocked punt.

Augsburg turned the ball over on five of its seven first-half drives, adding a field-goal attempt blocked by Hamline's Josh Richards on the final play of the first half. Two of its turnovers ended up inside Hamline territory, including a drive ending on a fumble inside the Hamline 13 in the closing minutes.

BETHEL HAS WON LAST 3 IN A ROW IN SERIES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg, in his 11th season as the Auggies' mentor, has the third-longest current tenure among MIAC coaches, with Bethel coach Steve Johnson (13 years) and St. John's coach John Gagliardi (49 years) ahead of him. With a 53-56 career record over 11 seasons, Osberg is closing in on the school's all-time win record of 56, set by Edor Nelson during a career that spanned 23 seasons (1947-69). Nelson was 58-118-10 in his Auggie coaching days.

However, Bethel's rise to prominence in the MIAC has mirrored Augsburg's. In Osberg's 10 previous seasons, Augsburg has a 2-8 record against Bethel. The Auggies' lone wins in the series in the past decade came in 1993, a 26-11 home win, and in 1997, a 56-22 triumph at the Metrodome. Bethel's wins have come in 1991 (32-3 at Augsburg), 1992 (24-9 at Bethel), 1994 (27-14 at Bethel), 1995 (27-7 at Augsburg), 1996 (53-18 at the Metrodome), 1998 (35-28 at Augsburg), 1999 (31-14 at Bethel) and 2000 (25-20 at Augsburg).

Since Bethel joined the MIAC in 1978, the series is tied 10-10-3. However, Augsburg has won just four times in 10 games at Bethel -- in 1979 (20-17), 1980 (42-23), 1984 (26-0) and 1989 (21-20). The two teams also tied twice at Bethel (13-13 in 1982, 30-30 in 1987). Bethel has won the last four times the teams have played at Armstrong Stadium -- 1990 (56-0), 1992 (24-9), 1994 (27-14) and 1999 (31-14).

AUGSBURG'S FINAL "HOME" GAME WILL BE AT METRODOME: Augsburg's last "home" game of the season, against Concordia-Moorhead, will be played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis on Friday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, and can be purchased from Gate D at the Metrodome on the day of the game. There will be no advance ticket sales. NO AUGSBURG PASSES ARE ACCEPTED (INCLUDING FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS); ONLY MIAC PASSES WILL BE HONORED.

The Augsburg-Concordia game was moved to the Metrodome because of previous schedule commitments for the air-supported dome structure -- known on campus as "the Bubble" -- that covers Edor Nelson Field during the winter months. The Bubble was installed and inflated on Sunday (10/28). The Bubble is used extensively by groups both on- and off-campus, including indoor soccer leagues, golf driving range training, etc.

The Auggies and Cobbers will be the only MIAC teams playing at the Metrodome this season, because of scheduling conflicts at the Metrodome. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) will hold its five-game Metrodome event on Nov. 9-10, with two games scheduled after Augsburg's contest with Concordia -- Minnesota State-Moorhead against Northern State (S.D.) at 5:30 p.m., and Concordia-St. Paul against Southwest State at 9 p.m. The NSIC will have three games on Saturday (11/10).

SCOUTING THE ROYALS (read Bethel's game notes via this link): Entering last week's game at St. John's, defending MIAC champion Bethel, ranked fifth in the American Football Coaches Association Division III national poll, was in the driver's seat to repeat as conference champions and claim the automatic bid to the 28-team NCAA Division III national playoffs. But after last Saturday's 34-0 loss to the Johnnies, the conference title chase has changed dramatically. The Johnnies, at 6-2 overall and 6-1 in MIAC play, are in the driver's seat, with the tiebreaker edge (head-to-head) for the "Pool A" automatic bid to the national playoffs on both Bethel and St. Thomas, also tied for the league lead at 6-2 overall and 6-1 in MIAC play.

That fact established, Bethel is facing must-win situations in both Saturday's game against Augsburg and next Saturday's contest at St. Thomas in order to secure one of only three "Pool C" at-large bids to the national playoffs, which go to non-title teams from the 18 "Pool A" conferences. The Royals dropped from fifth to 21st in the AFCA Division III national poll with the loss to the Johnnies, while St. John's was in 26th, just one spot out of the top 25.

Last week, St. John's took advantage of four Bethel turnovers -- three interceptions and a fumble -- and turned one into a score, a 99-yard fumble recovery from James Shafer in the second quarter. Brad Beyer opened the scoring by blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown. Ryan Keating threw two touchdown passes to Blake Elliott, and Josh Nelson scored on a three-yard run in the third quarter (set up by a 71-yard interception return by Jeremy Hood).

However, if you look merely at the statistics, Bethel held strong edges in many of the offensive categories -- a 441-270 advantage in total yardage, a 242-43 advantage in rushing yardage, controlling time of possesion by three minutes. But the end zone was foreign territory for the Royals against the Johnnies, as they were forced to punt five times, turned the ball over on downs five times and suffered four turnovers. Bethel reached the "red zone" -- inside the Johnnie 20-yard line -- just twice in the game.

Mike Johnson (Jr., Pine City, Minn.) led the Royals with 190 rushing yards, while quarterback Scott Kirchoff (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) threw for 199 yards, 86 yards to receiver Jordy Hage (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.). Linebacker Randy Larson (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Royal defense with 10 tackles (six solo).

Despite the loss, Bethel still has the top-ranked offense in the conference and is third in the country at 513.4 yards per game. Johnson is having an MVP season at running back, leading the league with 150.7 yards rushing per game. His 14 rushing touchdowns through the first eight games have tied a Bethel single-season record. He is leading the conference in scoring and is seventh in the nation. Kirchoff is throwing for 250 yards per game and has moved into third place on Bethel's all-time passing list with 4,941 yards. Junior receiver Joel Olson (Jr., Becker, Minn.) needs 80 yards receiving over the next two games to break Bethel's single-season receiving yardage record.

Bethel is currently second in the nation in rushing defense and 18th in total defense. A quality group of seniors on the defensive side of the ball have led the Royals all year. Hans Bengtson (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) and Nate Klint (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) have been leaders in the secondary. Bengtson has lived up to preseason All-American honors as he is among the top tacklers in the league and is leading the MIAC in passes broken up. The linebacking corps of Larson, Ben Kidd (Roseville, Minn.), and Jason Holm (Northfield, Minn.) have made big plays throughout the year and have been major factors in Bethel ranking at the top of the MIAC in nearly every defensive category. Defensive ends Jon Foss (Hinton, Iowa) and Rick Meyer (West Concord, Minn.) both have been dominant pass rushers for a Bethel defense that is leading the MIAC in sacks.
