Men's Hockey 11/3/01 -- Augsburg 1, Marian (Wis.) 1 (OT)
BOXSCORE
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (11/3/01) -- The Marian College men's hockey team opened its home season with a 1-1 nonconference tie of Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon in front of a good crowd at the FDL Blueline Family Ice Center.
The Auggies were the first team to find the net in a back-and-forth first period, as
Joe Pontrelli (So., Eagan, Minn.) beat the Sabre goaltender with just 2:45 remaining in the period to give Augsburg the 1-0 lead.
Both goaltenders held the opposition in check until late in the third period, when the Sabres tied things up when Brad Hawkins (Nepean, Ontario) knotted the game on a goal assisted by Dan Odegard (Oakdale, Minn.) and Mark Ewing (Langley, B.C.) to send the game into overtime.
Sabre head coach
Chris Brown -- a former assistant coach and sports information director at Augsburg (1996-97) -- and the rest of the squad thought they had the game won just 1:10 into overtime. But the Sabre goal was called off by the officials because a Marian player was in the crease of the Auggie goalie. Besides that one opportunity, neither team had many scoring chances in overtime and the game ended in a tie.
Goaltending play was excellent all night as Augsburg goaltender
Peter Samargia (Jr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) turned away 21 Sabre shots-on-goal. Sabre goalie Terry Dunbar (Duluth, Minn.) made 28 saves in the contest.
The two teams will meet for the rematch Sunday (11/4) at 2 p.m. at the FDL Blueline Family Ice Center.
