FINDLAY, Ohio (11/3/01) -- The University of Findlay women's hockey team picked up where the left off Friday night, defeating Augsburg College 11-0 in a nonconference on Saturday afternoon at the Clauss Ice Arena. The Division I Oilers improved their record to 3-5 overall, while the Division III Auggies started their season 0-2.
After winning 8-0 the previous night, the Oilers jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead, and a 30-4 shot advantage after the opening 20 minutes. Heidi Tallqvist scored 1:11 into Saturday afternoon's contest to make it 1-0 Oilers. Stasia Bakhit, Janet Ploncinsky and Melissa Oliver all added first period goals for the Oilers.
Findlay managed to push two more goals across in the second period, one from Abbey Strong and the other from Sherrie White, to give the Oilers a 6-0 advantage after two periods.
Five more goals by the Oilers in the third period gave Findlay the 11-0 win. Strong scored two more goals in the third, giving the sophomore defenseman her first collegiate hat trick. White added her second goal of the game, while Jenn Jessop and Monell Schroeder put home the other two for the Oilers in the final period.
Strong finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists. Tanya Truszkowski had four helpers, while Ploncinsky, Schroeder, and Oliver had a goal and two assists apiece for the Oilers.
Amy Jones made 12 saves in picking up her third win and third shutout of the season. The freshman goaltender has not allowed a goal in her first 180 minutes in a Findlay uniform.
Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin, Minn.),
Kristin Johnson (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) and
Laura Hind (Fr., Lafayette, Colo./Quest Academy HS) combined to make 58 saves for the Auggies. The Oilers held a 69-12 shot advantage on Saturday afternoon.
The Oilers will take nearly two weeks off before traveling to Cornell on Nov. 18 and 19. Augsburg returns to action with the home opener on Friday (11/9), hosting Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 7:05 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena.
